171 A well known name applied to a field on Kilail farm, deriving this name from a Chapel which is said to have stood about 7 chains south of the present house.
CHAPEL (Site of) [KiIaiI] 171 The tenant Mr. Davie, in cultivating this field some years ago, came upon what appeared to be the foundation of a building, (at place indicated by cross on trace) & currently beleived by the inhabitants to have been the chapel, from which the field or plain derived its name.
CAIRN (Site of) [KiIaiI] 171 immediately south of the same he also removed a cairn of stones; it was of considerable size, & comprised a great number of cart loads; Several large stones supposed to have been rude tombstones were also removed, all tending to point to the fact of a Chapel & burying ground having at some remote period stood here. The name Kilail being derived from 'Cill' a burying ground & Ail, supposed to be a corrupted form of a Saint's name.
