200 | A small but neat built Castle with four round towers on the four angles of the third story with one on the centre of east & west sides - the property of John Campbell Esqr. of Kilberry, being built on the side of the ancient Castle which was supposed to have been destroyed by an English pirate. A stone found in the ruins of the south wall and now built in the wall of the present Castle about the main door bears the following inscription "Plundered & burnt by Captain Proley an English Pirate 1513" "Rebuilt by J.C. 1844". An old brass bell in the possession of Mr. Campbell about 15 inches in diameter at mouth and about 12 inches deep & which local tradition asserts to have belonged to a monastery at one time near Kilberry Castle but no trace of it remains. it is supposed to have been used afterwards in the Chapel, it still gets the name of "St. Berry's Bell" theres no inscription on it & similar to the bells used in Country Churches. The Castle is situated on the west side of a clump of very large trees & nearly 1/2 mile N.W. [North West] of Keppoch farm house and about a mile S.W. [South West] of Cuilghailtro. "In the last century there was a Castle at Kilberry near the Parish Church. It is said that about 40 years ago there existed at Kilberry a bell, called St. Berry's Bell with the saints name inscribed". "Origines Parochiales." |
