The united parish of Kilbrandon & Kilchattan is Situated on the Western Shore of the County of Argyll, and consists of a portion of the mainland and a group of islands which are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, five of which are inhabited, viz Seil, Luing, Easdale, Torsay, and Shuna, the greater portion of which as well as the mainland are drawn on the 6 nich Scale. The portion of this parish in the mainland is bounded on the North and East by the parish of Kilninver and Kilmelford, on the South by Loch Melford and the Atlantic Ocean and on the West by Clachan and Seil Sounds which separate it from the islands of Seil and Easdale, & the Atlantic Ocean which separates it from the islands of Luing, Shuna, and Torsay.
"This parish had received its name from some one of those Scottish Saints who no doubt were celebrated in their own times, but of whom very little is now known, except that they were companions or followers of the famous St Columba. It appeared that before the reformation, there were four churches or chapels within the bounds of the present parish which were dedicated respectively to Brenan or Brandon, Cattan, Bride or Bridget and Coair. The places where these Churches once stood, and where the ruins of some of then are still to be seen, are called Kilbrandon, Kilchattan, Kilbride and Kilchoan. When these four churches or chapels or parishes were united the last two names were dropped, whilst the other two are still retained * * New Statistical Account.
There is not any portion of this parish detached (Save the islands, if they can be called so) nor is there any portion of any other parish locally situated in this parish. |

On the north west side of the island there is a slate quarry at present in use which is sunk to a depth of nearly 200 feet below sea level. Two old Quarries now disused and filled with water lie at the east end of the island. These were also wrought to a great depth. The slate in the island has been quarried for nearly two centuries and is held in great request for its fine qualities. The late Marquis of Breadalbane had the working of the quarries in his own hands but they are now let to a company. The homes for the men employed at the quarries are all of one storey high, and built near the east end of the island. "There are altogether four quarries wrought at present, viz the principal one at Easdale."

Near the place marked by Cross is said by the authorities to have been the site of the old Church or Chapel of Kilbride. No trace of it now remains altho [although] the field is known in the neighbourhood as the "Chapel Field."
It appears that before the Reformation there were four Churches and Chapels within the bounds of the present parish, which were dedicated respectively to Brenan or Brandon, Cattan, Bride or Bridget and Coan The places where these Churches once stood and the ruins of some of them to be seen are called Kilbrandon, Kilchattan, Kilbride and Kilchoan. When these four churches or parishes were united, the last two names were dropped whilst the other two are still retained.

A small eminence on the farm of Kilbride, about ¼ of a mile from farm steading. This eminence appears to have been fortified in a strong manner altho [although] nothing now remains of the walls. Mr Clark mentions that when trenching the ground on various occasions he has removed great numbers of Calcived stones. A great number of them have been used in building dykes on the farm and are still to be seen. He is of the opinion it was a vitrified fort. |
