OS1/2/9/1 KILBRANDON AND KILCHATTAN Kilbrandon & Kilchattan Kilbrandon & Kilchattan Kilbrandon & Kilchattan Kilbrandon & Kilchattan New Statistical Account Old Statistical Account Fullerton's Gazetteer Original Parichiales Various The united parish of Kilbrandon & Kilchattan is Situated on the Western Shore of the County of Argyll, and consists of a portion of the mainland and a group of islands which are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, five of which are inhabited, viz Seil, Luing, Easdale, Torsay, and Shuna, the greater portion of which as well as the mainland are drawn on the 6 nich Scale. The portion of this parish in the mainland is bounded on the North and East by the parish of Kilninver and Kilmelford, on the South by Loch Melford and the Atlantic Ocean and on the West by Clachan and Seil Sounds which separate it from the islands of Seil and Easdale, & the Atlantic Ocean which separates it from the islands of Luing, Shuna, and Torsay. "This parish had received its name from some one of those Scottish Saints who no doubt were celebrated in their own times, but of whom very little is now known, except that they were companions or followers of the famous St Columba. It appeared that before the reformation, there were four churches or chapels within the bounds of the present parish which were dedicated respectively to Brenan or Brandon, Cattan, Bride or Bridget and Coair. The places where these Churches once stood, and where the ruins of some of then are still to be seen, are called Kilbrandon, Kilchattan, Kilbride and Kilchoan. When these four churches or chapels or parishes were united the last two names were dropped, whilst the other two are still retained * * New Statistical Account. There is not any portion of this parish detached (Save the islands, if they can be called so) nor is there any portion of any other parish locally situated in this parish.
