Dunan Aula |
Continued |
|
[continued from page 13]
"In this action Olaus said to have been a son of the King of Denmark, was slain. Near the field of battle there is a little mount or tumulus which is dignified by the name of this hero; it is callled to this day Dunan Aula or the little mount of Olaus. There it seems he was interred, and not many years ago as some workmen were employed in enclosing the spot they discovered, after removing some loose stones a grave composed of four flags. - Upon inspecting this repository, they found an urn. Imagining they had got a treasure, they broke it, but to their great disappointment they found nothing there but the ashes of Olaus. General Campbell converted this mount into a family burying place. It is enclosed and planted. On the top of it a neat monument is built and there the General lately deposited the remains of his son."

of Barbreck. The battle began it is said on a spot called Drimree. In the first encounter the natives were obliged to give way and retreat up the valley. Opportunely receiving a reinforcment they rallied, at a place named Sluggan, and renewed the action with such vigour that the foreigners were in their turn compelled to give ground. The Danes having in some measure recovered themselves made an unsuccessful stand where they first joined battle."
New Stat [Statistical] Account
"This place is reported by tradition to have been the scene of a bloody engagment between the Danes and the natives &c
Though it is impossible to fix the date of the above battle it must certainly be very remote, previous at least to the conversion of these northern nations to the Christian faith; for the practice of burning the dead if it was common in these countries, was discontinued upon the establishment of Christianity among them."

About ten chains north east of Barbreck House and on the place called Druim Righ are the remains of what appears to have been a stone Circle. Several of the pieces can be seen merely protruding thro [through] the ground. It is not known for what purpose they were put there but supposed by Admiral Campbell to mark the place where some one was slain in the battle which took place in the valley.
This is evidently the remains of a cairn which has been removed, leaving a circular form but no standing stones like a stone circle. [Initialled] B.H.M. |

four feet high, the other about 7. They are also supposed to have been erected as monuments for those who were slain at Druim Righ.
"At Drimree a number of rude monuments were erected in honour of the warriors to whom the engagement had proved fatal. Of these some still remain. One large grey stone together with others of smaller dimensions which stood in a circular form were removed in order to furnish a proper site for the modern house of Barbreck". New Stat [Statistical] Account.
In the strath of the parish many monuments of death appear, which in an artless but striking manner record the battles of former times. These many grey stones rear their heads in the heath to mark the graves of fallen heroes. A cluster of these rude obelisks is to be seen quite close to General Campbells house of Craignish. This curious collection, the General with a laudable respect for antiquity, has allowed to stand unmolested. |

This name is applied to the spot on which the above Church is built. It is supposed to be the site of an old Chapel, and is known by the natives as Tigh an Urnuighe or House of Prayers.
"The ruins of two religious houses can still be traced Of one of these indeed few vestiges remain. It stood near the shore a little to the north east of the present Church and from its being called by the natives a house of prayer it seems to have been a popish oratory."
