011 It originally stood about 50 links East of the present Cross in High St. and was the place where in former times the sheriff of the county occasionally held his court. In 1537, an inqest was held at it, and that is supposed to have been the last. In the course of time the cross had become quite dilapidated, till about sixteen years ago, when it was put into thorough repair. It originally consisted of an upright pillar,
