"The parish is about Seven miles from East to West, and from 2 to 3 Miles from North to South. It was erected into a parish in 1627, one division of it having belonged to Rathen and the other to Fraserburgh. It is bounded by these two parishes, and also by that of Lonmay, Deer and New Deer. The Small Stream of Water called the North Ugie runs through the parish from East to West, and joins the other branch called the South Ugie about 6 miles below Strichen, and both united, fall into the Sea about a mile North of Peterhead." The upper portion of the stream is known as the Gonar & keeps this name till it joins the Greenspeck, at a point about 2½ miles north west of the village of Strichen. From thence to Peterhead it is known as the North Ugie "The North Ugie runs through the parish from east to west, and joins the other branch called the South Ugie, about six miles below Strichen, and both united fall into the sea about a mile north of Peterhead." Cranna Tarwathie Description of Formartine & Buchan Ry [Railway] George Benzies Hillfoot 007 A large heap of stones situated on the southern acclivity of the Hill of Mormond, &, a short distance north of the farms of Mormondfoot. Tradition states that in former times Strichen possessed no Burying place nearer than the churchyard of Rathen; In carrying the coffin from Strichen to the place of burial the mourners rested at this spot previous to taking the Hill, which, at this point becomes very steep. The Cairn is well known throughout the district as the Resting Cairn, & measures 50 feet in Diameter by 4 feet in height. "In the early periods of Strichen's history, the people had to carry their dead over the Hill of Mormond, to their burying ground on the Rathen side, and their footpath is still to be seen, as well as a Cairn whereon they rested the corpse before taking the steepest part of the hill. This is called "the resting cairn," and lies between Dencalie, or "the den of rest," and what was called the "Fountstone," now "Huntstone." "Description of Formartine & Buchan Ry [Railway]"

Factor George Rennie Back Street Strichen Description of Formartine & Buchan Ry [Railway] 013 In the woods of the policy a short distance west of the Mansion, stands the ruin of a small chapel, built by Lord Lovat when proprietor of Strichen & intended for a family place of worship. The building was never completed, & is now gradually falling away. "A little to the west of the mansion stands a roofless Catholic Chapel, which had been erected by the former proprietor as the private sanctuary of the family. The walls seem entire & in good preservation. The only ornaments about the small edifice are its pointed door and windows. Trees are growing inside." Strichen Mr Clark Strichen 013 Several clay urns containing human remains were discovered in opening quarry (for construction of the Railway bridges at Strichen) on north side of public road a little east of Newmill. A stone axe, broken in two pieces; one, on either side of an Urn, also a number of flint arrow heads, several similarly placed on either side of the urns, were also discovered. A portion of the above may be seen in the Aberdeen Museum.

The buildings and portion of land surrounding, was given by Lord Lovat (former proprietor of Strichen) to the Catholic body of this district.

Mr James Chalmers Strichen Ticket at Railway Station 013 A considerable village situated on the north bank of the Ugie. And in the parish of the same name. It comprises several streets, the principal being High Street. The public buildings are Town Hall, corner of High and Bridge Streets, Episcopal Chapel West Street, Free Church High Street, Parish School Market Stance, Nicol's School North Street and Episcopal School opposite. A branch office of the 'Aberdeen Town and County Bank' is situate in High St, also branch of the North of Scotland Bank North Street, here is the Post Office. Adjoining the Railway Station is a commodious Market Stance where Cattle markets are held monthly. The Streets (between kerbstones) i.e. High Street, Bridge Street, North Street, South Street, upper portions of West, and Market Streets are repaired and under the jurisdiction of the County Road Trust, (New Act). The remainder, Lanes and Foot pavements, by voluntary tax on the feuars. There is no public gaswork. The village continued [continued on page 33]

OS1/1/82/33 STRICHEN Strichen Continued 013 [continued from page 32] is supplied with good water from a cistern situate about a quarter of a mile west of the Parsonage, Water taps are placed in the various streets. The Fraserburgh branch of the Great North of Scotland Railway skirts the eastern extremity of the village at which there is a Station. "The village was founded about a century ago by direction of Lord Strichen who was then proprietor The feuars sit under perpetual Charters." Banffshire Journal

Mr Mackie states that in 1803 Lord Lovat (the then proprietor) had boards bearing the names High Street, North Street, South Street and Bridge Street, placed on the respective Corners, but having fallen into decay are now obliterated.
