County of Aberdeen -- Parish of Skene
Note- It is mentioned in the Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire C. 1098 that a Roman road passed through this Parish, near the line of which Roman urns, a Roman sword and the points of two spears were found. Respecting there the Examiner writes "The site of these findings is not known now; the late owner of Kirkville & William Knowles Esq. appears to have been the only person who could have supplied the information. They are "not in the possession of the proprietor of Kirkville"- as stated in Stat. Ac. [Statistical Account] - "and no knowledge of their whereabouts known." Referring to the road he writes "A Roman Track - not a regular Road - appears passing through this Parish on various maps, but all real knowledge of its whereabouts is lost - every enquiry has been made".

This temple stands on a wooded eminence a little north-west of the Mains of Fornet, It is near the margin of the plantation and consists of three irregular blocks of stone, two of which are standing upright and one lying on its side slightly imbedded in the ground. The upright ones are 7 feet high, 4 broad and 2½ thick - the other is 6 feet by 4, and the cause given for its fallen position is that some years ago the workers on the estate were proceeding with its removal for building purposes intending to take the others also until stopped by the proprietor. There are but very few who can give any information about this object. and there is no reason for believing that the stones were ever more numerous than at present. |

This name is applied to a large stone nearly cubical and measuring about 3 feet on each face, the following traditions are associated with it. "A stone, bearing the inscription Drum Stone, Harlaw, 1411, stands on a height upon the lands of Easter Skene. It is said that Mr. Irvine, the laird of Drum, rested on this stone, (his men drawn up in line nearby,) whilst on his march to the field of Harlaw, where he fell fighting hand to hand with McLean of Coll." New Stat [Statistical] Account
"On Upper Auguhorsk farm within sight of both Drum & Harlaw there is a large stone called Drum Stone, on which, says tradition, Irvine the redoubted laird of Drum, made his testament, immediately before he went to the battle of Harlaw."

A large mansion, varying from two to five stories in height, and said to be composed of a very old building which has been enlarged both in height and ground work, it is the property of the Earl of Fife.
"The original charter of the lands of Skene, granted by King Robert Bruce is still preserved. But the family and name of Skene, as lairds of Skene, after long possessing the lands in direct line, became extinct in 1827. The lands are now in the management of trustees. The Earl of Fife is heir of entail. The House of Skene consists of two buildings united. The oldest has evidently stood for several centuries, from the style of building and strength of the walls. The date is not known. The other part of the house is comparatively modern, - the interior having been completed only a few years ago. *** The identical Skian by which the lands of Skene were won, is said to be in possession of a relative of the family."

This is the Site of where a Wooden Coffin was found in trenching the field about 12 years ago. it contained human bones and the remains of a pair of Shoes.
"Tradition has it that a man of the name" of Jock Smith belonging to Tarland was executed in Aberdeen for Horse stealing about 100 years ago and that his friends got his body to have it buryed in Tarland and on the road home with it had to bury it here as they could carry it no further the night was that rough with thunder rain and lightning. |

Two large irregular Camps with several small Circular ones, they have evidently been hastily thrown up as at present the remains are a stony bank, about 8 feet of a base & in some places about 4 feet high - which could be easily made from the Surrounding Tumuli. whereas the Bank is sharply defined a slight etching is shewn.
Local tradition points to this as one of the Marquis of Montrose Encampments during his Victorious Career of A.D. 1645-6. "Brown's Highland Clans," likewise notes the fact that Montrose encamped here and a Sword of the Period was recently found when repairing the Statute Labour Road passing this one of them. |
