023 | "The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, which formerly belonged to the English Episcopals, built in 1767, but on the death of the Revd. [Reverend] Dr. Laing their pastor the congregation was united to that of Bishop Torrys. In consequence of this, it was sold to the Methodists for £300 sterling. It has since, and of late, undergone a thorough repair, and is now one of the most commodious places of worship in town"- Vide Buchan's Annals of Peterhead 1819 page 85. This building was again purchased by the present proprietor Mr. Topping of Bowness, Carlisle, and the ground floor fitted up as a Hall or Sale-Room and is presently known as Toppings Hall. The upper portion as a Chapel and for some time used by the Parish Church as a Chapel of Ease, and again used by the Independents, and Wesleyan Methodists until the completion of the new Methodist Chapel in Queen Street in 1866. It is now used by the Established Church for lectures, prayer & class meetings etc. with the privilege granted to the Baptists of holding divine worship on Sunday evenings etc. The Chapel will accommodate about 350 persons. |
