This parish extends along the Coast in a straight line about four miles, bending along the Sea shore about five miles, and from east to west it extends from three to four miles. It is bounded on the South by the parish of Cruden; on the west, by Longside; on the north, by Saint Fergus; and on the east, by the German Ocean. The area of the parish is about 9085 imperial acres, or nearly 15 square miles. The climate is variable, but has been much improved in consequence of extensive drainage. Within the last thirty years, the crops, partly from the improved state of the land, and partly from earlier sorts of grain being sown, come to maturity from ten days to two weeks earlier than formerly.
The tide off Peterhead flows from Rattrayhead, in the parish of Crimond, South and South-east, and ebbs north and north-west. During Spring tides it runs three and a half miles an hour. There are, however, considerable variations, in consequence, it is supposed, of the adjoining headlands. The Sea at Peterhead is very Salt, and the temperature is never so low as in friths, or in the vicinity of large rivers.
Note - There is no portion of this parish detached, nor portion, or portions of any other Parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish. |

Raven's Craig |
Mr. A. Brand Ravenscraig
Mr. R. Lillie Inverugie
Annals of Peterhead by P. Buchan 1819 |
015 |
Applies to a large Castle in a good state of preservation, built upon a rock on the South bank of the River Ugie, and about 2 miles from the mouth of the River Ugie, and 3 miles North west of the town of Peterhead the building is about fifty feet in height from the ground and on the property of the Governors of the Merchant Maiden Hospital Co. It has been observed by people living in the vicinity until within this last few years that two Ravens regularly built their nests in the chimney.
"Ravenscraig is built upon a rock on the South side of the river Ugie, and as far as history throws any light upon the subject in the beginning of the thirteenth Century by one of the Cheyns, who settled in Scotland about the beginning of the Twelfth; and not as some suppose, in the Ninth Century by one of Marischal family
Annals of Peterhead by P Buchan 1819
"Ravenscraig, in the barony of Torterston, is said to have belonged to the family of Keith, who afterwards acquired the lands of Inverugie by marriage. It is a fine ruin and specimen of an old baronial Castle. The walls are in some places eleven feet thick. It is supposed to have been built in the eleventh century or twelth century. Applies to a large Tower or Monument about 19 ft square at the bottom and 76 feet in height erected in 1833 by The Whig party in Peterhead in commeration [commemoration] of the passing of the Reform Bill in Parliament in 1832; the Tory party having erected a column in the town of Peterhead the Whig party erected this one on Meet Hill. There is a winding staircase up the inside of it for people to go to the top of it, it originally was intended to have a room at the top of it so that people could have a fine view of the sea and the country from it, it is still in an unfinished state owing principally to the right of way leading to it being lost through the property and lands being sold to a different proprietor; it is built on an artificial Mound of earth about 6 ft [feet] in height with a stone wall around it. |

"Crossing the turnpike and ascending the Moat Hill we reach the Reform Tower erected in 1833 soon after the passing of the Reform bill. The spot on which the Tower is raised was an artificial tumulus of earth. Tradition records it as a place for the administration of justice; but judging from the discovery, while digging for the foundations of the tower, of a Stone crypt containing a bowl-shaped kind of Urn, which enclosed some fragments of the bones of a human being including the lower jawbone with part of the teeth adhering we may suppose it to have been a barrow, or place of Sepulture." These extensive polishing works were established about 1860-61 and embraced all the work from the rough state, as the stones are delivered from the Quarries untill the elegant and highly finished polish is executed. Employing upwards of sixty men, and having their works fitted with exquisite and powerful machinery (driven by Steam power) they are qualified on the shortest notice, to execute the most extensive orders. From the fact that their works are situated near to their own Quarries, in the very heart of the Granite Country they can offer advantages, both as regards choice of Stone, and size of blocks, which few Companies in their line can afford. Specimens of the work executed at the "Peterhead Granite Works" may be seen throughout the District of Buchan, and in various parts of Aberdeenshire, in the pillars and pillasters of the New India House, the Foreign office, and the City Club in London Abney Park, Kensal Green etc. and various parts of America, Australia, New Zealand etc. Plain and Ornamental polished Granite in Red and Blue, always on hand. A Woollen Mill formerly stood here. John McGlashan & Co. [Company] proprietors. |

Extract from the Rev [Reverend] J.B. Pratt's Buchan page 78.
Returning from Cairn Catta, in direction of the Buchanness Lighthouse, we reached the Den of Boddam, which runs along the western base of the Sterling Hill and, passing the Carding Mill, terminates in the immediate vicinity of Sandford Lodge. This is a remarkably barren and solitary glen, with scarcely a blade of grass to cover the naked soil. The Den is traversed by a small stream, the waters of which have been husbanded by means of a barrier built across the glen, forming a pond of considerable extent. Twice within the last twenty years, this embankment has given way, the water doing great damage by its impetuous outbreak. |

We find the following description of this Camp in the Rev [reverend] John B. Pratts Buchan p.p. 78, 79 & 80.
Along the sides of the glen are a number of excavations, of different sizes, large enough to contain from four to eight persons. These tradition says, were the houses of the Picts or Peights. But considering their obscure and inaccessible position, we should rather incline to the opinion of their being places of concealment, probably for the [continued on next page] |

women and children, during the incursions of an invading foe. The place is well adapted for such a purpose, being little calculated to excite the cupidity of the marauder. But even these desolate habitations of a pre-historic race are being invaded by the spade of the husbandman and, in the course of a few years, every trace of them will probably have been obliterated. It is a hazardous thing, in this age of progress, to advocate the preservation of such barbaric remains; but as characters of the obscure past, legibly impressed on the face of the Country it seems an equal amount of barbarism entirely to wipe them out. Such relics as these are the visible landmarks of the world's advance. For the sake of a few shillings - for the revenue can hardly be counted by pounds - These rude vestiges of the past, which for so many ages have been the admiration of the curious, are being for ever swept away. Even the poor tenants who are driven to rear their cottages on these bleak and sterile slopes, manifest some interest in the ancient bourachs or villages; nor can the prospect of a corn-plot entirely reconcile them to these enforced acts of vandalism. It is a legitimate question how far the preservation of these vestiges of antiquity influences the popular mind. We have only to look at our relatives across the Atlantic, to see how their [continued on next page] |

broken interest in things past has utilised, and, to a certain extent, depraved the national character: and there is no doubt, on the other hand, that the memory of great events, like the contemplation of the giant features of a country, have their binding influence on the moral nature. Even within our own brief recollection, the legendary lore, which fastened itself on the history of every cairn, or ruin, or name of renown, gave a kind of dignity to the present in its association with that which is past. Our ingle-nook forgatherings were not then always taken up with cross-breeds, railroads, and London markets; but with those old-world stories - romanced, it may be, but romanced only, to give a keener interest to the oft-repeated tradition.
"Nor need we blush that such false themes engage
The gentle mind, of fairer stores possest;
For not alone they touch the village breast,
But fill'd in elder time th' historic page."
Our very superstitions, like all human fallacies, had in them the germs of that which was good and true. |

Buchanness Lighthouse, within a few hundred yards of the villa, is a fine circular tower, the lanterns of which stands 130 feet above high-water mark at spring-tides. It is a revolving light, flashing once in five seconds, and was the invention of the late Mr. Robert Stevenson, for which he was presented with a medal by the King of the Netherlands. The light is seen at sea to the distance of sixteen nautical miles. It was first exhibited in 1827. The lighthouse stands on an insular rock at the Southern extremity of the Bay, of which Peterhead forms the northern boundary. The distance across is about two miles, following the bend of the Bay, it is three miles. |

Within a few hundred yards of this point stands The Old Castle of Boddam, formerly The Seat of Keith, Knight of Sudquharn. It is placed on a promontory between two deep gullies, along which, when the wind blows from the east, the sea rushes with uncontrollable fury. The castle stands upon the brink of one of these ravines, but possesses no particular interest, either as a place of strength or as a specimen of architecture. The remains consist of the archway* [Continued on next page] |

On the opposite side of the gorge and immediately over the Sea, stands Lord Aberdeen's Marine Village. (It is now the property of Mr. Russell of Aden near Old Deer) commanding a remarkably wild and striking prospect. Everything has been done to render this a charming Summer retreat. Walks have been cut along the face of the braes leading to the best points of view; and a marine garden, laid out with much taste, in the sloping hollow of a sheltered glen, extends down to the very edge of the Sea. In conveying water to the villa from a fine Spring on the north-eastern ledge of the Sterling Hill, some pipes were discovered which must formerly have been used for the purpose of supplying the Old Castle from the same Spring. |

One or two other arches, of smaller dimensions, are also to be seen, and the entire foundations of the building may yet be traced; but, unless as a type of the family which once occupied it - gone, but still lingering in the memories of the past, - it possesses nothing worthy of notice. The ruin is carefully preserved with that taste and feeling for which the Earl of Aberdeen has always been distinguished. Another trape-dyke in this ravine, and the hornstone porphyry and protogene rocks behind the neighbouring lighthouse, are well worthy of observation.
