Mr. A. Diack. Meresman and Poor Rates Collector. |
066 ; 075 ; 086 |
Is bounded on the north by the parishes of New Machar and Belhelvie; on the east by the Sea; on the South by the parish of St. Nicholas Kincardineshire; and on the west by the parishes of Banchory-Devenick, Newhills, and Dyce. Its greatest length, from North to South, is about 7½ miles; and its greatest breadth is about 4 miles. The river Dee divides it from Kincardineshire; and the river Don goes windingly across its centre. Its surface rises slowly from the beach, and is beautifully diversified by heights and hollows and by the fruits of art. The general landscape is pleasent, and comprises some fine close scenes and a good far-away view. Its chief features are the beach and Sea, the course of the river, some woods on the Don, clump of trees on the rising grounds, country mansions, Villas, manufactories, Villages, the town of Old Aberdeen. The steep and rugged banks of the Don, from the house of Seaton, to below the old bridge, are truly romantic. Many curious little Sandhills occur near Ferryhills, moulded into various forms, and disposed in all directions, seemingly by the retiring of some immense quantity of water. The soil of some parts of the parish is naturally fertile; but that of other parts either lies barren or has been forced into productiveness by the labour and expense. The principal mansions are Grandholm, Scotstown, Denmore, Balgownie, Hilton, Powis, Cornhill, Seaton, and Woodside. The part of the parish north of the Don contains a population of 700 in Villages, and about 900 in scattered houses. The part South of the Don is all included in the parliamentary boundary of the burgh; and contains the manufacturing Village of Woodside, about two miles North-West of New Aberdeen, the Village of Ruthrieston, about two miles South-West, the suburbs of of Broadford, on the North [continued on next page] |

[continued from previous page] North side. Gilcomston, along the north end of the West side, the Windmill Brae and College Street, near the South end of the same side, Holburn, about half-a-mile to the South-West, Dee village, on the bank of the river Dee, and the new Streets situated between Gilcomston and the Dee, extending nearly three quarters of a mile Westward, and containing many of the best houses of New Aberdeen. The agriculture of Old Machar has, in recent times, received large accessions both by the reclamation of Waste lands in the form of general improvements: and the manufactures, in addition to what goes on in the town comprise extensive Cotton-Spinning, thread-Spinning, Weaving, bleaching, and flax-Spinning at Grandholm, Gordon's Mills, Printfield, Broadford, and Rubislaws. This parish is in the presbytery and Synod of Aberdeen. The charge is collegiate. Patron of both charges, The Earl of Fife:
Extracted from the Imperial Gazatteer of Scotland. Vol.1 page 7.
Note: There is no portion of this parish detached, nor portion, or portions of any other parish within this.

A small portion of enclosed ground containing a grave of one of the former proprietors of the then Estate of Whitestripes. It is said that this proprietor, (whose name was "Cassie") and his family are all buried in this grave. It is impossible to determine the date of the formation of the Grave Yard, as no one in the district remembers to have heard anything more concerning it than that it is the Grave of one of the former Lairds of Whitestripes. There is the fragments of one Headstone in the Enclosure, and with difficulty the figures 1647 can be made out. But whether this is the first and only stone that was erected, cannot be decided. |

An ancient artifical Earthen mound, situated near the Old Machar Church. It is generally supposed to have been a Beacon Hill, on which the inhabitants were in the habit of lighting a fire, for the purpose of alarming and calling together the inhabitants to protect each other on the approach of an enemy. Others assert that it was deposited there by persons who had commited Certain sins, which were punished by the transgressors having to carry so many loads of Earth or Stones every day to a place appointed by the Chief Ecclesiastic of the parish. |

[Continued from previous page] Brig o' Balgownie or Bridge of Don - Extract from a description of bothe Touns of Aberdeene.
by James Gordon, Parson of Rothemay
"It remayns onlie now
for to Speake concerning the Bridge of Done, distant about four or 500 passes
from Old Aberdeene northerlie. It consists bot of one arche, bot that verie large and high, scarcelie to be equalled, most
pairt of it builded of ashler, the two pyks thereoff foundit so upon two rocks as that they easilie breake the Streame of the river,
one of them receiving it in a bosome, befor it meet with the bridge. Such as see it would think that nature hade shaped
that place for a bridge. From the bridge, Done runs now straight Eastward towards the sea. Yit it is recorded that of
old the river of Done did enter into the Sea under the broad hill of the Lynks, takeing a great turne that way; and it
is affirmed that the long loch called Cannonsweets Pott, which lyeth along a pairt of the Lynks, was a pairt of the Channell
of Done, which did run along that way. Lykewayes the oldest mappes of Scotland descryve the river of Done fetching
Such a compas as is spoken of. No man can certainly tell who builded the Bridge of Done. The commone and most
probable reporte is that the renowned Prince Robert Bruisse, King of Scotland, at such time as he banished B. [Bishop] Henrie Cheyne
from his sea, and drave him out of Scotland besyde, did command for to sequester the bishopes yeerlie revenue to
be imployed towards pious uses, and that this bridge ( which is lyke to be true) was builded with a pairt of that revenue."

Parish of Old Machar
[continued from previous page] Bridge of Don
"Of the Bridge of Don. This ancient fabric is also under the charge of the magistrates
and council, who are the administrators of a considerable fund belonging to it. Some of our historians relate, that it
was projected by Bishop Henry Cheyne, who was ni the Episcopal See of Aberdeen in the end of the thirteenth century, and
built at his expense; but this information must have been founded entirely upon conjecture, which shall be immediately
Shown. Sir Alexander Hay, one of the clerks of session, afterwards lord Clerk register, by a Charter, dated February 1st
1605, granted to the Council and community certain annuities, amounting to £27.8.6. Scottish money, arising from
Various Crofts of land in the neighbourhood of Aberdeen, to answer as a fund for defraying the expense of repairing and
otherwise supporting the bridge. These annuities had formarly belonged to the Chaplains of the Cathedral Church of Aberdeen
and were aquired by him subsequent to the Reformation. In that charter, he particularly mentions that the bridge
was the noble work of the renowned and illustrious King Robert Bruce; and that he had obtained this information from
certain annals, to which he had had access. This donation from Sir Alexander Hay, being only £2.5.8½ Sterling, was the
original means of raising the present opulent fund belonging to the bridge. The annuities which he transfered were lent out and
improved at interest, under the direction of the administrators, till the year 1709, when the Council having pur-
chased the land of Easter Skene, for the behoof of various public institutions under their administration a certain
portion of these lands was appropriated to the bridge, and the accumulated fund applied, in part, to the payment of the price.
By the rise in value of the property which had been thus purchased, the yearly revenue of this
fund has now increased to about £600 Sterling, and the property belonging to it is estimated to be equal to £12.000 Sterling.
The structure is formed of one Gothic arch, founded upon a rock on each side of the river, where it is narrowest. It is sixty
six feet ten inches wide at the bottom, and thirty four feet six inches high above the surface of the river, which, at ebb tide, is
here 19 feet & an half deep. The bridge is so narrow that two carriages cannot pass upon it, and is become very much decayed
besides, the approaches to it from the higher grounds, on each end, are extremely inconvenient, and even dangerous, to
loaded Carriages. In ancient times it would appear that the bridge, distinguished by the name of "Polgown," was provided with a chapel, for religious pur
poses in the same manner as the Bridge of Dee, according to the Custom of the age, and was under the sole charge and direction of the magistrates of Aberdeen. In
the year 1443, they Voted the admission fees of a burgess of Guild to be paid to Sir William Ettles, the Chaplain, for defraying the Expense of repairing the bridge; and , and in the year 1605
the community Voted the sum of five hundred merks, for the same purpose; but the donation from Sir Alexander Hay, which followed within a few months after, superseded the necessity of levying this grant from the citizens.

Parish of Old Machar
(Description of Bridge of Don continued )
"To enter Old Aberdeen you cross the Don by a Stupendous Single Gothic
arch, about 70 feet from the surface of the Water. Henry Le Chen, bishop here 1281-1329, for joy that Bruce's fortune turned, and himself was able to come back from England, applied all the revenues of his See for the time of his absence, to build this bridge, which is 72 feet wide at the water, and 60 feet high to the top of the arch. (Keith's Cat.[Catalogue of Scottish Bishops] p.65.) Elsewhere Keith says, it is 66 feet 10 inches wide, 34½ feet perpendicular height to the water, depth of water from the surface to the bottom under the arch at low water 19½ feet (ib.[ibidem] p. 242). The north bank of of the river is formed of romantic perpendicular cliffs. From hence it is near a mile to the town, by a handsome modern house of George Middleton, Rector or Vice-Chancellor of King's College. Bishop Cheyne was a nephew of the Red Comyn, who was slain by Bruce and Kirkpatrick, in the church of the Minortes at Dumfries; and had thus stronger motives than those common to most churchmen, for espousing the interests of the party opposed to the Sacrilegious, though patriotic author of Comyn's death. On Bruce's acquiring the ascendancy, the Bishop withdrew to England the common asylum of the party to which he belonged. After a residence there of several years, he was recalled by Bruce, and reinstated in his See, the rents of which had accumulated to a considerable sum during his exile. From this last circumstance, and from the fact that the Bridge of Dee was erected by Bishops Elphinston and Dunbar, has probably arisen the commonly received opinion that the Bridge of Don was the work of Henry Le Cheyne. If, however, the bridge had been erected at the Bishop's expense, or had he even been entitled to share in the honor of its erection, we cannot suppose that it would have escaped the notice of his minute and credulous biographer Hector Boece. The latter, however, not only does not ascribe the work to Bishop Cheyne, but states, that Robert Bruce, on reinstating him in his See, ordered the accumulated revenues to be expended on the restoration of the Church, lest they should be applied to less appropriate purposes. Sir Alexander Hay, who in 1605, granted certain annuities for the support of the Bridge of Don, states in the Charter which he then granted, and on the authority of certain "annals" (quia annales testautur), that it was erected by the orders, and at the expense (ex mandato et impensis) of King Robert Bruce. The inhabitants of Aberdeen were early and steady adherents to Bruce's fortunes; and during the struggle which preceeded his establishment on the throne, and the distractions which followed his death, suffered severely for their loyal attachment to his cause and family. During the few years that Robert was able to devote to the Civil interests of his country, he bestowed on Aberdeen Early and substantial proofs of his gratitude for its unshaken loyalty, and among these ought to be reckoned the erection of the bridge of Don."

075 |
This is the place where one of the Porters or Gatekeepers of the King's College was buried after being frightened to death. The tale told is that Downie being a very officious person, and being found of carrying tales, and complaints, to the Proffessors. The Students who at this period, resided within the University Gates, and many of the complaints which were told by Downie had reference to them. They determined to put a stop to his tale bearing propensites, by giving him a fright. Accordingly they assembled in one of the Class rooms in the College, appointed a judge & jury, had Council for the prosecution & defence. One of there number was sent for Downie, who was brought into the room, by some excuse of his conductor: When brought in and told that he was about to be tried for his life, poor Downie laughed, and no doubt thought that it was all a good joke, but before the trial was over the man began to think the matter was getting serious, his council did his best for him, but the Charges of telling the Proffessors storys could not be denied, and he was condemned to be beheaded, ten minutes were given him to prepare for death. A block and axe were now produced, and Downie was ordered to kneel & lay down his head, which he did, one of the party struck him a blow on the neck, with a wet towel, and poor Downie was dead. The Young men fled, some went abroad, and several were brought to trial, but none could be proved more guilty than another. The only confession made was " We were a airt and pairt in Downie's Slaughter"

A fine old piece of masonry consisting of three arches, but no parapet, it having been demolished a long time since and carried away for building purposes, the other portions of this antique fabric are however in a good state of preservation and prove by their appearance that its erection must have been at a remote date, evidently about the year 1523 according to the testimony of the first authority quoted, who is an antiquarian and well acquainted with many object of a similar character in and around this district. He accounts for the origin of the name from a marsh having existed where the bridge now is, over which pedestrians had to cross on planks, which fact may have suggested the retention of the name Plank for the bridge after it was built. It is a well known name to all the old parishoners in this locality, and to many others officially connected with this Parish. |
