Parish of Old Deer -- Aberdeenshire

[Sculptured Stone continued from page 228]
Cistercian Abbey of Deer founded in 1218 by William Cumming, Earl of Buchan, but I have been
informed that since that time all the remains of the Abbey have been removed. The cross is
incised on the face of the pillar. which is a Whin Stone.." [Sculptured Stones of Scotland, Page 6. Vol. [Volume] I.]
The Cross appears to have been 4 feet long by 2 1/2 feet broad; on the reverse side of the Stone
are incised the well known "Crescent with Sceptre", and another object about the meaning of which Antiquarians
differ: it may have been intended represent a Buckle.
