074 This was once used as the Parish Church of Newhills - but was disused after the erection of the New Church, about the year 1830. The roof is now off it, but the walls remain entire, The burying ground for the Parish adjoins this ruin.
Mr George Davidson, of Pettens, a burgess of Aberdeen, - and who had amassed a considerable fortune, and risen entirely by his own industry, - mortified for the endowment of a resident clergyman in this western part of St Machar, or Old Machar, the lands of "Keppelhills," consisting of nearly 700 Scotch acres, which he had previously purchased from the Town of Aberdeen. He also caused a church to be built upon these mortified lands, about 5 miles distant from Saint Machar; and all at his own expense in the year 1663. This place of worship, therefore, was originally a chapel of ease, and had continued to be so for about three years. The death of Mr Davidson did not prevent the incorporation of the new church with the established church; for in 1666 the persons interested in the concern, and authorised to act, applied to the Lords Commissioners for Planting Kirks for a disjunction of a certain district of St Machar around the church built by Mr Davidson, and its erection into a separate parish which application having the consent of all parties, was successful, and the decrees of the Lords Commissioners accordingly was obtained that year. Since that time the parish has continued separate and distinct, and possesses all the rights which belong to other parishes of the Established Church of Scotland. New Statistical Account.
