020 A field on the above farm, situated immediately east of the steading. Deriving this name, it is said, from the Chief or General of the army of Donald of the Isles, having fallen here, while giving battle (date unknown) to the Thane of Buchan.

020 About centre of this field, [see above] distinct traces of a cairn of stones may be seen, which, is also called The General's Cairn, in Pratt's Buchan it is Termed "Donald's Cairn" The latter appellation is not recognised in the locality, where the tradition of the "Battle of Lendrum" is strong. The battle is described as having lasted three days. The battle of the first day being fought on what is now the farm of Lower Brownhill (19.12.trace 6). "Here, till lately, the memorials of a terrible carnage, still spoken of as the "Battle of Lendrum," were preserved. A barren heath on the farm of Brownhill was thickly studded with mounds and small cairns. The tenant, in bringing this heath under the plough a few years ago, removed these hillocks, in many of which he found pieces of corroded iron, and other evidence of the conflict." Pratt's Buchan. The battle of the second day was fought in the vicinity of this field, and that of the third day ending in the defeat of Donald at The bloody butts of Lendrum (see 19.11.trace 3). The site of the cairns on the farm of Brownhill cannot now be identified.
