SWORD FOUND [Millfield] | Sword found Sword found |
James Leith Esq Millfield Mr Smith, Thornhill |
012 | A Sword was found at the place indicated on trace about a century ago. The point of it - made into a Knife is now used by the Miller of Millfield for trimming Sacks. "The wild heath seems to wave over the grave of many a long forgotten hero, on those fields where contending barons tried the Keenness of their Swords. Some of the Covenanters, cut off by the Ogilvies, have given a name (Findlays Mire) to those spots where they fell, and some heads of spears, of a yellow colour and of the form most approved when the Scottish spear was almost as tremendous a weapon as the English bow, were lately found in an exhausted moss."
