Rev. [Reverend] James Whyte Parish Minister Mr. P. Smith Post Master Methlic Mr. James Hutcheon Blackcraig |
029 | A large and handsome building of a whitish granite and erected on a new Site about two years since. Situated in the village of Methlick and about 4 chains south of the ruins of the old Parish Church in the Methlick Grave yard. Of the history of the old church, it is stated in the Parish Statistics that "The Church was rebuilt in 1780 and the manse in 1806. The gift of the Kirk land in the parish may be traced as far back as the reign of Robert 2nd who by a Charter dated the 16th June 1373 Confirms a Charter by Walter de Menteith de Pedinacalan to the Virgin Mary and the Parish Church of St. Devenick of Methlick and the Vicar of the Same of a piece of land called the Haulch bounded on the one Side by the Water of Ethyon [Ythan], stretching on one hand from the ford of the burn of Melok to the ford which is called Clochy at the other. It is probable the present Glebe is very nearly the piece of land referred to in the Charter just quoted." |
