of about 200 acres of wood and a few acres of heath, the remaining portion of the parish is under cultivation. The general geological formation of the parish is Hornblende rock, which is to be met with in gigantic masses : the quality of this rock is so fine, that with a little labor it can take on a polish equal to marble; whinstone and limestone abound in the parish and on the Estate of Bethelnie rock-crystal is to be found. There are no hills of consequence in the parish; but the surface is very ridgy and undulating. The views from certain parts of the parish are very extensive, extending westwards to the well known "Tap O' Noth," and to the lofty Bennochie, as also to the district of Formartine. There have been several stone cists. Urns & flint arrow heads discovered at various times when tilling the ground. There can still be tracked the remains of a Roman camp on the Estate of Bethelnie. This parish contains the Town of Old Meldrum which was erected into a Burgh of Barony in 1672. The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland (Fullarton's) at page 409. says, "A post town, a market town & a burgh of barony in the parish of Meldrum, Aberdeenshire. It stands on the road from Aberdeen to Banff, 5 miles north north east from Inverurie & 18 north north

"north west of Aberdeen. Its streets are very irregularly built; but they nevertheless contain a number of good houses. The town-hall is a respectable edifice, surmounted by a spire. The inhabitants appear to possess a spirit of enterprise, - they are chiefly merchants, professional men, tradesmen, handicraftsmen, and laborers; during the winter and spring months a market is held every fortnight for the sale of cattle and grain. There are also two annual fairs in may and november. There are also a Brewery and a Distillery; and in the vicinity are several corn mills." The population of the Town of Old Meldrum at last census was 1553.
At page 474 of the Extracts from Statistical account of Aberdeenshire is the following. "The ancient name of this parish and by which Spalding takes notice of it in his history of the troubles and memorable transactions in Scotland is * [See below] Bethelnie which is a derivation from the Hebrew words (Bethelnow) signifying House of our God; & the appellation has been at length extended to the district in the vicinity of the place of worship which now constitutes the parish. The modern name of the parish "Meldrum" is probably derived from the Celtic words Mealldruim, signifying the Shoulder

[*] "Balthelney" is corrupted, perhaps, from "Bal-Nethalen", that is, "The dwelling of Saint Nethalen", or Saint Nachlan, who was it's tutelar. 1.

"or ridge of a hill. The foundations of a small private chapel built during the establishment of the Roman Catholic Religion in this Country are to be seen on a farm in this parish, which for that reason still retains the name of Chapelhouse. There is a well near Called Lady Well. The remains of a Roman encampment existed until lately on the farm of Bethelnie, they have now been levelled & the ground is ploughed. The encampment was a very small one, & could only have given lodgement to a detachment from the army. There is still a place of interment at Bethelnie, where the church of this parish formerly stood; several families have their burial ground in it & the sepulchral vault belonging to the proprietors of Meldrum is there. The present church is supposed to have been erected about the year 1684. it is consequently an old building, and has an antiquated appearance. In the immediate vicinity of Old Meldrum, there is a place of worship belonging to the Scottish Episcopalians, & in the town there is another belonging to the members of the United Secession-"
Note - There is no portion of this parish detached nor portion or portions of any other parish inclosed within the boundary of this parish. [Signed] R Dickson Sapper R.E. [Royal Engineers] |

Little or no vestige of the foundation of the church is remaining, and it seems it is nearly 200 years since the church was used as a place of worship, Situated in an ancient graveyard at old Kirk farm and on the property of Mr Urquhart of Meldrum House.
The old church of Bethelnie lyes a mile to the north west of the house of Meldrum; About which is a churchyard, in which most of the inhabitants of that parish still continue to burie their dead. Saint Nachlan is said to lye interred there. whose day is observed on the * [note below] seventh of January yearly; and all the people of that parish observe it as a great holyday, with much rejoicing, abstaining from all manner of work, and giving themselves up entirely to mirth and jollity; because the last time the plague was in Scotland, though it raged in all the parishes about yet it did not enter into that parish at all; which the common people impute to Saint Nachlan's being buried in their parish; and therefore in gratitude, reckon themselves obliged to honour his day. and are much offended at all of the neighbouring parishes, who receive either grass, water, or fire out of their parish, and do not join with them in the observance of that day. (From Macfarlane's Geographical Collections M.S. [Manuscript]) (Collections of the Shires p. [page] 559).
* [note from above] The best authorities however state that St. Nachlan was worshipped on the 8th of January. He is said to have lived about the year A.D. 450. [Initialled] E.H.C. Capt. RE. [Captain Royal Engineers]. |

This is mentioned in Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland to have been a Roman Fort The ground has of late years been tilled and brought under cultivation. The site or track of ditch is still visible over the arable field. Mr Mackie Steward of farm remarked that the ditch was upwards of 6 feet deep and 10 or 15 feet wide, previous to its being levelled, with a vast quantity of small boulders. The dotted square figure shown on the Trace seems to be the bottom of ditch or the main Trench of the Fort. Trace or hollow feature of the same having remained in the cultivated land &c. |

N.B. Although I have allowed this to remain as yet on the Plans, I cannot believe that this is a Roman work at all, as I can see no vestiges of the Romans in this direction hitherto, & the object itself is very small; it could only be the praetorium of the Camp from its size. I am making further enquiries on the subject. [Initialled E.H.C] Capt. RE. [Captain Royal Engineers] |

"A post-town, a market town, and a *[see note below] burgh-of-Barony, in the parish of Meldrum, Aberdeenshire. It stands on the road to Banff, 5 miles North, North-East of Inverurie, and 17½ North, North-West of Aberdeen. Its Streets are very irregularly built, but they nevertheless contain a number of good houses. The inhabitants appear to possess a considerable spirit of enterprise, they are chiefly Merchants, professional men, tradesmen, and laborers. There is a good weekly Market for provisions; and during the Winter and Spring months, there is a fortnightly Market for the sale of Cattle and grain. There are also two Animal Fairs in May and November. There is a Distillery, a Brewery and also several corn mills in the vicinity. The Town was erected into a Burgh-of- Barony in the year 1672, but has not now any local Magistrate. There is in it the Town Hall, a respectable looking edifice, suited to the size of the place, four Churches, four Schools a Mechanics Institute, two Branch Banks, a post office, police station &c, and a number of excellent shops. There is also carried on a considerable trade in leather, and it has long been celebrated for its Turnip Seed. The Streets, Shops, and dwellinghouses are lit with gas. population about 1600".
Chiefly extracted from Fullartons Gazetteer
*[Note] Old Meldrum was erected into a Burgh of Barony by charter in the year 1672 (Statistical acct [account] of Scotland p. [page] 154 Vol [Volume] XIII) |

"This Church which has been built nearly over the Site of the former one, consists of nave, chancel, South porch, organ chamber, and vestry. The Spire, containing the bell, rises to to the height of 80 feet at the South-west corner of the nave. The style adopted is Early decorated, treated in a Simple manner suited to the material. Externally the walls are of dressed granite in courses, relieved over the window openings by alternate blocks of black marble in the arches, the tracery and internal finishings are of freestone. The roofs, which are of high pitch, are covered with blue slate, and the ridges furnished with rich iron cresting, and the gables surmounted by Crosses - those over the chancel, east end of nave, and porch, being of Stone, and that over the west end of nave, of Iron, and is (as is also the vane) a good specimen of Kidmore's iron work. The porch is an open one with moulded arch resting on columns of polished Peterhead red granite. Contrasting well with the bright grey granite. The roofs are framed throughout with arched principal couples resting on carved stone corbels. Provision has been made for lighting the Church by brass candelabra, on oak standards, and is also heated by hot water pipes. The windows with elaborate tracery. is filled with stained glass. The whole work is the design of and superintended by Messrs Ross & Joass, Architects of Inverness. at the cost of £1800 sterling. Consecrated and opened for divine worship on St Matthew's Day 21st September 1863 *[note below] "and will accommodate about 200 hearers. The Revd [Reverend] W.Y. Moir is the present Incumbent - *[note] The above quotation copied from the "Account of the consecration of St. Matthew's church, Old Meldrum.
