A small parish in the county of Aberdeen surrounded by the parishes of Clatt, Tullynessie, Keig, and Premnay. The Gaudie flows though it from west to east. North of the Gaudie, the country consists of a series of small hills, in many places very steep, but all arable except on their summits. South of the Gaudie their is less arable land, the ground rising to the summit of a range of hills connecting with Benachie. Their is very little wood in the parish - The principal villages are Duncanstone and Bridge of Leslie, both small and containing no Inn - the latter is the Kirkton. A considerable number of antiquities - such as Cairns and tumuli, have existed in the parish but they have been mostly swept away when improving the land. A standing stone called the "Ringin' Stone" still stands in the west of the parish and a very fine specimen of a sculptured stone may be seen at the farm of Newbigging on the east of the parish. The only building of Antiquity is the Castle of Leslie.
Note - There is no portion of this Parish detached, nor portion, or portions of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this Parish. |

043 |
This stone forms a very striking
feature in the landscape. it stands at an angle of about
75 degrees with th ground, placed on its edge, & supported by a stone
at one of its ends. All round the edge of this enormous Stone there is
a hollow sunk to about a 1/3rd of an inch deep, & 2/3rds wide, Showing apparantly the
part where the stone was girt-round in being dragged
to its position.- From its huge size, & its site as well as general appearance there
can be no doubt hat this stone is either a "Cromlech",
or an "Altar-Stone" of a Druidical Circle; I am
inclined however to think it the broad, large stone
of a "Cromlech"

A huge Reinnachie granite stone about 6½ feet-in altitude, 3 feet in thickness, and about 12 foot in length. It is thought to be the remains of a Druids Altar but even the oldest- inhabitants do not remember of hearing any one say that they remembered of seeing any other stones about this place. It is almost certain that there had been at one time the great number of cairns and other antiquities found near this place go to support the idea. The view from this place is very extensive especially to the East |

Mr John Ingram of New Leslie has from time to time found in a field called the Castle Croft 6 Silver Coins and 6 Copper Coins. The coins are all very much corroded but he thinks some of the silver coins belong to Edward the I. reign others to Elizabeth 's. The copper Coins cannot be correctly read.
The Arrow Heads are neatly formed and are of the ordinary size. The Military Brass Plates are similar to those now in use, but on one is written Gareich Volunteers 40. The Bronze Sword Handle is beautifully carved and of the ordinary size. The Stone Axe is 7" [inches] long 3½" [inches] across the mouth, very neatly formed and smoothly polished. |

Sculptured Stone
(found here) |
Mr James Thomson Newbigging 1859-60 |
044 |
A small sculptured stone found a few years since on the farm of Newbigging by the present tenant. Mr James Thomson. The stone is of the kind locally known as "Bennachie Stone" and when found was in a sloping position having the sculptured face facing Bennachie. The ground where it was found was originally marshy and it is conjecture that, though originally on the surface, the stone had been gradually covered by the sediment left by the water. Nothing else is known respecting it. It now lies in Newbigging farmsteading. |

About twenty five years ago while Mr John Ingram was employed trenching a part of the Ben Hill he came upon what he considered
ancient graves. In some 12 or 15 he found the head enclosed by four small stones. The bodies appeared to lie direct east and west. Also a few mound which were more irregular and much larger, but in all of them he found pieces of bones charred wood and black clammy earth. The people in the neighbourhood speak of
this place as the Old Grave Yard.
