[Honourable] William Forbes, finding the castle decaying, (referring to the more ancient one) pulled it down, and laid the foundation of a lesser building, June 17th 1661, adorned with five turrets. The whole were enclosed within a rampart and fosse; the drawbridge was in the west and guarded by a strong watch tower which had closed by a gate and portcullis. Over the gate is the date 1643 and at the foot of the ruins the former buildings are conspicuous.
