Suppose CROMLECH on Site of Stone Circle [Holffsburnside] Rev [Reverend] Thomas Brisbane Minister Duncanstone
Rev [Reverend] James Peter Minister Bridge of Leslie
Mr John Ingram Farmer New Leslie
043 This stone forms a very striking
feature in the landscape. it stands at an angle of about
75 degrees with th ground, placed on its edge, & supported by a stone
at one of its ends. All round the edge of this enormous Stone there is
a hollow sunk to about a 1/3rd of an inch deep, & 2/3rds wide, Showing apparantly the
part where the stone was girt-round in being dragged
to its position.- From its huge size, & its site as well as general appearance there
can be no doubt hat this stone is either a "Cromlech",
or an "Altar-Stone" of a Druidical Circle; I am
inclined however to think it the broad, large stone
of a "Cromlech"

Bridge of Leslie

043 A huge Reinnachie granite stone about 6½ feet-in altitude, 3 feet in thickness, and about 12 foot in length. It is thought to be the remains of a Druids Altar but even the oldest- inhabitants do not remember of hearing any one say that they remembered of seeing any other stones about this place. It is almost certain that there had been at one time the great number of cairns and other antiquities found near this place go to support the idea. The view from this place is very extensive especially to the East

P.[Page] 72."Accurate inquiry might parhaps discover, that the circles, and ovals of erect stones, with small pillars and small carns
within them are the Oratories of ancient times; and blank the Circles of Stones, leaving an Altar, or a Cromlech within the
area, or on the outside of them, have been used, for the different purposes of making sacrifices."-

P.[Page] 73.4 " There appear from a thousand remains, both in South and North Britain, to have been two kinds of Druid altar
the first consists of flat Stones which are either incumbent, or upright, (the altar stones are generally connected with
Druid Circles, and have sometimes artificial cavities in them.) the second sort if the Cromlechs consisting of a large
broad Stone, which is suppoerted by several Stones that are usually placed upon their respective Edges."- (Chalmers' Caledonia)
