Lumsden, Cushnie House Mr. R. Ferris Ground Officer Valuation Roll for 1859-60 061 ; 062 ; 063 ; 070 ; 071 I find the usual manner of writing this name in the Parish Registers to be, Leochel Cushnie, But Dr. [Doctor] Taylor and Mr. Reid are of opinion that the name ought to be written, Leochel and Cushnie, as by so doing, the names of both Parishes would be retained, The annexation of these Parishes is legal, A decreet for it was passed on the 28th January 1795 by the Court of Teinds, and two years after that the present Church was built. The parish of Leochel and Cushnie is in the Presbytery of Alford and Synod of Aberdeen; it is bounded on the north by the parishes of "Kildrummie" and "Tullynessle and Forbes;" on the east and S [South] east by the parishes of Alford and Tough; on the south of Coull and Lumphanan and on the West by the parishes of "Tarland and Migvie" Logie-coldstone" and "Towie." OS1/1/53/65A [Note attached to previous page, p.65] [Page] 65a THE CAIRNGORM CLUB AND SOCKAUGH HILL. To the EDITOR of the DAILY FREE PRESS. Sir, - As the forthcoming visit of the members of this Club to the so-called Sockaugh Hill is being talked of in this quarter, I read with great interest "R.A.'s" graphic account in Tuesday's "Free Press" of the ascent to the top of the hill by the dauntless three who nobly acted as pioneers for the forthcoming expedition. But why I have taken pen in hand at present is to enter my protest against the name "Sockaugh" being applied to the hill. I who have lived under its shadow for more years than I care to mention never heard it called the Sockaugh Hill before. I do not wonder at the expression, "We ken nae- thing about yer Sococh," as Presindye is the name that it is known by far and wide. Some- times it is called the Cushnie Hill, as the Glen of Cushnie lies on the north side of the hill. The name "Sockaugh" seems to have got into the Ordnance Survey map, but it is quite a mistake. The Sococh Burns, Little Sococh and Muckle Sococh, lie north-west from Presindye, in a great hollow among the Towie Hills. They join at what is called the forkings, the combined stream running north-westward into the Don. It is a good fishing stream. The hills around the Sococh Burns have names, such as Deer's Dikes, Scame Clova, Cushnie, and Melgum meet at a point on the western side of Presindye. Humphery's Well, a strong mountain spring, is near this spot, and close beside the hill road that leads from Cromar to the lower end of Towie. There is also a very romantic bit of scenery on the Cushnie side of the hill called the Kashel Burn. A spring at its top under the shade of a steep bank is famed for the coldness of its water. The ascent of Presindye from the Cromar side may be made with comparative ease by two different routes. Starting, say, from Tarland, there is a road, by way of West-town and Ranna- gowr, which lands the climber on the east side of the hill. The other is by way of Easter Davoch and Bog, which leads to the west side. The latter part is hill road, but vehicles could drive almost to the base of the hill. With a clear day the view from the top is both varied and extensive, and will well repay the lover of nature who scales its ample height. Hoping the Cairngormers will get a light wind and clear sky for their trip to Presindye, - I am, etc, R.D. (Robert Donaldson) Tarland 18th April, 1895.

OS1/1/53/65H [Note attached to previous page, p.65] [Page] 65h Name of a hill "Sockaugh" in Aberdeenshire - on the Ordnance Maps. Carlisle 15 June 1895 Sir Your letter of 5th June after the matter has been investigated at Southampton has been forwarded to me. The authorities given in the Ordnance Survey documents for the name "Sockaugh" are Mr. Andrew Ross, Factor, Tarland; the Revd [Reverend] Mr. Watson, Minister of Tarland; and Mr. H. Thomson, Mosstown, Leochel Cushnie. The first two are both [continued on page 65i]
OS1/1/53/65I [Note attached to previous page, p.65] [page] 65i dead. They were excellent authorities, having lived in the district of Cromar all their lives, and being men of educa- tion. I do not know anything of Mr. Thomson of Leochel Cushnie. But besides the above au- thorities you will find, if you refer to the Statistical Account of the Parish of Towie, which touches I think the hill or at any rate the hill range in question, that the hill is there called "Soccoch". And not only so but in the Statistical Account of the Parish of Leochel Cushnie, which certainly touches the hill in question it is also called "Soccoch". Both these accounts [continued on page 65j]
OS1/1/53/65J [Note attached to previous page, p.65] [Page] 65j are of date about 50 years ago, & were written by the Ministers of Towie & Leochel Cushnie of that date. So that it is clearly established that 50 years ago the hill was known by the name "Soccoch" by the people who lived on the north side of it in Towie & Leochel Cushnie; and that at the time of the Ordnance Survey being carried out, I think about 1867 or 1868, it was known by the name "Sockaugh" to two gentlemen who had lived all their lives at Tarland on the South side of it, namely Mr. Ross & Mr. Watson. The Ordnance Surveyors there- fore cannot be said to have applied the name to the hill without considerable reason. At the same time as my house is straight south of the hill at a distance [continued on page 65k]
OS1/1/53/65K [Note attached to previous page, p.65] [Page] 65k of some three miles or so, I am en- tirely aware that the name "Sockhaugh" is not at the present day generally ap- plied to the hill, at any rate by the people of Tarland & Cromar to the south of it; and I propose when next in the area to make further investigation into the matter and if necessary to have the name changed on the Ordnance map. But I should say from the pronunciation that the more correct form of the name would be "Pres- andye" i.e ["Pressindye"] rather than "Preasandye" I was not aware that the cor- rectness of the name "Pittenderich" was continued until I received your letter. With the exception of the quotation of authorities given by the Ord [Ordnance] Survey, which has been sent to me from Southampton, I am writing from memory; but I think you will find what I said as to the Stat. [Statistical] Account is correct. -- yours faithfully George Williams Esq. -- J. Farquharson Col. [Colonel] Thornhill -- D.G. [Director General] Ordnance Survey Stirling
