005 |
These are the remains of an Ancient Castle which stood on a small rocky eminence. Close to the crossing of the "Burn of King Edward" by the old turnpike road from Banff to Turriff. there is nothing know[n] of its origin or occupation further than it belonged originally to the once powerful family of the "Comyns" Earls of Buchan. It appears from the thickness of the remaining portions of the walls to have been a very strong place.
The family of Comyns came into Scotland, among other Norman Lords in the retinue of King David the first they rapidly rose to wealth and power their career being at once brief and brilliant. They figure in the history of Scotland for nearly two centuries, their power being suddenly extinguished by forfeiture, banishment, and proscription

by King Robert the Bruce. That as was the race of the Comyns, current tradition ascribes to this proud and enterprising family the erection of the whole line of Castles along the seaward margin of their territory - Slains, Rattray, Inverallochie, Cairnbulg and Dundarg, besides the family seat and cheif of all Kin-Edar. Gairniston Castle appears to have been the residence of the chief of the Clan Dalgarno but there is very little known about it at present; there is not an apparent vestige of it now; but the small park in which it's situation is shown, is consider'd to have been the Castle Garden.
A small stream from the southwards falls into the Burn of King Edward near the ruin, on the right bank of which formerly stood Garniston, the seat of the Cheif of the Clan Dalgarno. vide Pratts, Buchan. P. [Page] 204 |

This Castle was built by John Urquhart, of Craigfintry, which was the proper name of the Barony, early in the Seventeenth Century, between 1604 and 1607. The founder, who was also ancestor of the Urquharts, of Meldrum and Byth, was a gentleman of Some note in the trouble-Some times in which he lived, and is mentioned repeatedly by different historians. He twice had gardianship of the elder branches of his Family, during the Minorities of his nephew, and grand-nephew, the celebrated Sir Thomas Urquhart, and was generally Known by the name of the Tutor of Cromarty, As Such he is in the list of Chiefs and heads of Families, who were ordered to find Security for the good Conduct of their respective Clans, by a act of Parliament, in 1587

[Continued from page 103]
He died at Craigston Castle November 6th 1631 and was buried in the place of interment for the Family, in the church of King Edward, in this Country, There are few old houses in the north of Scotland that unite So much Comfort with that intricacy, or rather disregard of plan, which characterised the Style of building in use, when it was erected
"Inscription on the Wall," "foundit the fourtene of March one thousand sex-houn four yeiris and endit the 8th of December 1607 - " Vide Pratts Buchan. P. [Page] 205" Originally the Castle consisted of a central Arch and two wings - subsequently the two wings were connected by an Arch, the upper range of the building being thus converted into a complete square. Sir Andrew Leith Hay, in his Castles of Aberdeenshire says; The front of the lofty arch is adorned by grotesque effigies bearing crowns, or grasping warlike or musical instruments with a richly carved pediment of red sand stone. The inside of the Castle is remarkable for a spacious hall, now converted into a handsome drawing room, containing numerous specimens of curiously carved oak panelling of the same age as the building and the remains of its original decorations. These present the effigies of a very miscellaneous assemblage of heroes, Kings evangelists, and cardinal virtues. The Castle now belongs to Pollard Urquhart Esqr. |
