083 A small compact Village, the houses being generally neat & well built, and owned by Mr Ross of Muchley, who pays a small yearly ground rent to the trustees of the late F Gordon Esqr. local tradition has it that James the Vth [5th] of Scotland was hospitably entertained here during one of his erratic wanderings, by a small Crofter named "Cochran" who got the ground this Village stands on as his reward, subject to some small ground rent to the Lord of the Manor, hence its name.
