052 ; 053 ; 063 |
A parish in the district of the Garioch Aberdeenshire, bounded on the north by Leslie and Premnay, on the east by Oyne and Monymusk, on the south by Tough, and on the west by Tullynessle. The river Don forms its boundary for a short distance on the southwest and afterwards belongs to the parish until it divides Oyne and Monymusk. There is no village in the parish bearing a distinctive name, but clustered close to the farm of Wealthiton, is a merchant's shop, the parochial and a female School, and a few dwelling houses; while nearly directly north on the summit of a hill stands what is usually spoken of as Keig, consisting of the Established church and Manse &c. The parish generally slopes southward and is well cultivated, and contains extensive woods, particularly about Castle Forbes. Its antiquities are remarkable, consisting of two stone circles and an immense *Cairn called the Barmykin. As usual great quantities of Flint Arrowheads, Stone Axes &c have been found in the district
*The name "Barmkyn" refers to the enclosure, & not to the cairn within it [Initialled] EHC Capt R.E. [Captain Royal Engineers]
Note. There is no portion of this parish detached, nor portion, or portions, of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish. |

Bennachie, as adopted, is the only safe
spelling. Beinn-na-ciche is now
condemned by all Gaelic scholars.
All attempts to explain this name have
entirely failed. The best are mere conjectures,
& it must be acKnowledged that no one Knows anything about it.

Statistical Account |

This Circle "is situated in a belt of wood, a quarter of a mile north-west of the farmsteading of old Keig. It is about 66 feet in diameter, and in the circumference of the circle there are two upright stones, 9 feet above ground, with an immense stone lying between them about 16 feet long, 6 feet high, and 5 broad at one end, and differing from the other in being flat at the top, of a quadrangular form and placed on the south side of the circle. This could be no rocking stone and has evidently been used as a stone of sacrifice, there being now no altar stone in the centre of the circle, if had ever been." Extract from Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. Parish of Keig, Dated 1843, Page 943. There are also two smaller stones nearer the centre of the circle, each about two feet high. |

In the year 1860 when Mr John Sutherland, farmer, Mains of Tulloch, was improving a portion of land S.E. [South East] of the farmsteading, he came upon a quantity of flint arrowheads. The place marked on trace is very near the spot where they were found, Flint arrowheads have been found on nearly every farm in this district. They were found on the farms of Boginthort, Craigpot and Craigmeadow. I cannot find out the exact place where they were found on any of the last named farms, |
