It is supposed to have been built early in the 16th centuary - and was inhabited as late as 1745 - being then in ruins.
The two Gables serve for walls to an outhouse - which is built between them. It is on the estate of Avochie - and was at one time used as the residence of

Huntly Castle (In Ruins) |
Dr. [Doctor] Shearer Torry St. Huntly

A Dunbar Bogie St. Huntly |
026 |
The Castle, which is now in ruins evidently consists of two parts, the remains of the ancient castle of Strathbogie, and the present Huntly Castle. the former originally belonged to the ancient and powerful family of the Comyns.
[Inserted note] It never belonged to the Comyns.
Enough remains of the original edifice to indicate the imposing scale upon which it was designed, and the importance of its powerful owners. There is no direct or reliable date when it was built. It was demolished after the battle of Glenlivet in 1594; and the present Huntly Castle was built in 1602. It is a regular castellated building, erected evidently for warlike purposes.

[continued from page 126]
The chief part of it consists of a large circular Tower, and it appears to have been surrounded by a moat. It is also generally believed that there was a subterranean passage from the Castle to the Deveron, where the inmates could be supplied with water during a siege. Of this passage, however, no trace can be found, all that now remains of it, are, the roofless walls, which are about sixty feet high. |

The name, which is of Galic origin, is supposed to mean Small hill; which is very probable, as the Farm steading is Situated on an eminence a short distance north east of the Glashmach Hill, in comparison with which it is small indeed. King James the Fifth is Said to have lodged a night at this Farm, in the year 1540, who, being in disguise was received as an ordinary foot traveller, or perhaps one of the lower class, and a Gaberlunzie of the more Sober and comparatively well dressed discription; As recorded in the Legends of Strathisla, Banffshire and Strathbogie. |
