[Note beside 'Elfin Hillock']
Elf. A fairy creature (Jamieson)
I consider that this Hillock like many others such as "Fairies' Hillock" &c, is probably named
from some connection with the spiritual world, & have consequently corrected the spelling
to that now adopted. [Signed] E.H. Courtney. Capt. R.E. [Captain Royal Engineers]
