"This Parish is situated in the district of Formartine. It is bounded on the South by the Parish of Belhelvie, on the west by the parish of Udny, on the north by the burn of Tarty,
from the parish of Logie Buchan, and by the river Ythan, from
the Sands of Forvie, on the east by the German Ocean. It extends about seven miles from east to west, and about three from South to North. The river Ythan is about a quarter of a mile East of the village. It is here of a serpentine form, and is navigable nearly a mile and a half. The River abounds with Salmon, Sea Trout, flounders and a great many other small fish, but it is chiefly famed for its abundant produce of Mussels. it is well known that there is little wood on this part of the East Coast of Scotland, but the plantations around Foveran House and Ythan Lodge have thriven tolerably well. In the western part of the parish, where Mr Hunter of Tillery built, a few years ago, a handsome and commodious house, and laid out the ground with great taste, wood grows very rapidly. Foveran has its name from the castle here, which is very old, and is thought to be so called from a sweet and very impetuous spring (at the foot of the wall, having an arch built over it) for the Irish 'Foveran' signifies a Spring." SITE OF HOSPITAL OR MONKSHOUSE
"The tiends of this parish belonged to th Abbaey of Deer, gifted by the ancient
Earls of Buchan, of the name of Cumming founders of that Monastery, the Monks
whereof had a house and Small parcel of ground in the Newburgh for a residence
or resting place to them, Called Monks home, now turned to an Inn, honoured
once by a Lodger of Sublime Character The Pretender." (Col on S. of Aber & Banff P. 371.) [Collections on the Shires of Aberdeen & Banff, P. [Page] 371]
"Newburgh in Buchan was an Hospital founded in the reign of King Alexander III."
(who reigned from 1249 to 1292) "by Alexander Earl of Buchan Justice General
of Scotland, These Hospitals were erected either for receiving of Strangers
or for maintaining poor and infirm people and were governed by a
Superior, who was called Magister." (Spottiswoode's Relig [Religious] Houses P. [Page] 477)
"William Cumming Earl of Buchan gave to the Abbacy of Deer (which he
founded.) a great many lands in those parts. (Ibid P. [Page] 423)
There are several patches of ground which were Called Monksholm in and
around Newburgh which are supposed to be part of the land gifted to the Abbey
of Deer. Mrs Gordon of Newburgh (now upwards of 85 years of Age) states that,
She was born in the Old Inn above mentioned, and that in her young days it was
called "Monkshome", and was supposed to be on the Site of the Hospital. There is no

of the Village. It is the burial

and it should not be allowed to lie in so totally open a state. There
are some remains of an ancient Chapel within the ground, which goes
among the people under the name of the Rood Church. In a service
before the Sheriff of Aberdeen on 10th January 1558, of Elizabeth Meldrum,
relict of Alexander Gray, burgess of Aberdeen, among others, of Certain Crofts
