048 A fine River rising near the North West End of Aberdeenshire and falling into the Sea near Newburgh.It is navigable for Vessels of 200 tons burden to the Quay at Newburgh, and from this to near Ellon the traffic is principally carried on by Barges and Small Vessels of about 50 tons burden. i.e. at High Water Spring Tides, no part of the River is navigable at Low Water. The Tidal currents are very rapid that of ebb Tide being about 8 knots an hour. This River is Celebrated for Salmon and Sea Trout, Mussels, Pearls, and Flounders, and the Herbage on its Banks is much Studied by Botanists.
