The parish of Ellon is situated in the "Buchan district" in Aberdeenshire, and is about 16 miles north by west of the City of Aberdeen. It is about 9½ miles in length by about 7 in breadth, and contains about 24,000 acres, the most of which is cultivated. This parish is comparatively flat as there are no hills of note in it. though the general appearance is decidedly bumpy, the only hills worth mention are the Hill of Dudwick and the Whitestone Hill, in the north, and the Hill of Ardgrain which is situated in about the centre of the parish. There is but one Village in this parish and it is named after the parish Viz. "Village of Ellon". This village is beautifully situated on the north bank of the Ythan, and is much frequented by visitors in the summer season. (See description of Village of Ellon.) The Formartine & Buchan Section of the Great North of Scotland Railway runs through this parish, entering at the South west and leaving at the north west end. There are three Stations for goods & passenger accommodation on this line situated in this parish. Viz. Esslemont. Ellon & Arnage. The only river in this parish is the Ythan. though there are three or four fine Trouting streams such as the Ebrie. Youlie, Bronie. &c. The Ythan which rises in the parish of Forgue from several springs called the "Wells of Ythan", is considered to be one of the best Salmon rivers in Scotland. it is also noted for its production of very fine pearls. one of which is said to adorn the Crown of Great Britain. This parish is of very little note to the Antiquarian, though there are still several Antiquity's remaining such as the remains of Chapel in the village, remains of Old Castle of Waterton which is situated about a mile down the river from the village, Toll Booth, in the village. Old Castle of Esslemont, Arnage House &c. &c. Several stone cists, Urns, Stone Celts and Flint Arrowheads have been found at different times in this parish. and I may mention that Mr. Thomson of Ellon has at present in his possession a fine specimen of an Urn, which he found the other day while making a road through the Craigs of Auchterellon, there is the site of two cairns (shown on

traces.) in the north end of the parish near the farm of Drakemyre, in one was found a Stone Cist, an Urn & Flint Arrowheads. and in the other was found a Stone Cist, an Urn, and a few very old Coins. There are several places of worship in this parish the most of which are situated in the village. The parish Church stands on the site of a very old Church or Chapel, and is well attended. There is an Episcopal Chapel near the village which is also well attended, especially by the Gentry of the district. There is a Free Church and a United Presbyterian Church, both in the village. There is two Parish Schools in this parish, both endowed, the one is situated in the village. and the other at Tillydesk about 3½ miles north of the village. besides these there is the Free Church School, and three or four private schools. The principal proprietors in this parish are the Earl of Aberdeen, Alexander Gordon Esq. of Ellon. Henry Gordon Woolrige Esq. of Esslemont. John Leith Ross. Esq. of Arnage. John Turner Esq. of Turnerhall. and Henry Udny. Esq. of Udny.
"The name Ellon is generally supposed to be a corruption of the Gaelic word Aileann, which signifies an island. Its appropriation as the name of this parish may be accounted for by the circumstance that a small Island in the river Ythan, adjacent to the site of the village of Ellon, marks the position of the ferry formerly used on the principal line of road leading from Aberdeen to the northeastern districts of Scotland. In support of the origin here assigned to the name Ellon. it may be remarked, that in an inscription on some old communion cups, presented to the KirkSession by the Forbeses of Watertown, the word is written Elleann. Port Ellon, the name of a village in Perthshire, is understood to be of similar derivation".
"The north-eastern range of the Grampians. Benachie. the Foudland-hills, and the tops of the higher mountains on Speyside, are. when the state of the atmosphere is favourable, destinctly within the range of the observer's eye, which also commands an extensive view of the German Ocean, stretching from the Girdleness lighthouse in the south to within a few miles of the point of Rattray in the north." Extracts from Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. Page 899.
Note _ There is no portion of this Parish in any other; but there is a portion of Methlick drawn with this Parish, and situated nearly in the centre of the Parish, and bounded by Tarves on the west. |

"John Gordon" (Son of John Gordon of Coldwells, descended of the family of Haddo, by Marjory Cheyne, daughter to William Cheyne of Arnage.), having been formerly a Sea-Chaplain, was promoted to the See of Galloway in 1688, as 'tis Said, by the Earl of Melfort (who being a Roman Catholic, 'tis thought meant no Kindness to the Church of Scotland by it), and consecrated by Archbishop Paterson at Glasgow. He is reported to have been of a very unguarded conversation, artful and pragmatical, and So complaisant, on a view of interest, as even to yield up principles. He followed King James VII. into Ireland, where that prince made him Chancellor of Dublin - the Archbishop having fled. He also attended the King into France. About 1702 he went to Rome, where having abjured his religion before Cardinal Sacripante, and having also renounced the orders he had received among the Protestants as will in themselves; he received, in 1704, the tonsure from the Pope Clement XI (from whom he took the additional name of Clement), and the four lesser

038 |
At about a mile above Kinharrachy, the Ebrie flows into the Ythan. This stream has its source in the parish of New Deer. In its ordinary volume it is of no great account; but in heavy rains, owing to the unusual declivity of the banks along its course, it swells into an imposing torrent. It has a character of its own, however; the occasional fury of its passage has worn deep holes in its channel, so that from a harmless-looking stream it sometimes proves a dangerous pitfall. Extract from Pratt's history of Buchan, page 243. |

At a distance of about a mile & a half from the village of Ellon, on the oldmeldrum road, stands the noble and picturesque ruin of the old Castle of Esslemont, surrounded by a small plantation. Viewing this ruin of massive masonry from a short distance, one would be inclined to imagine it to be an old Church, or some sacred edifice, but on closer inspection it turns out to be the ruins of a magnificent feudal fortress. The people in the district know little or nothing about this ruin, and I cant get any authentic information as to the date of its erection, or when it ceased to be inhabited. |

038 |
The Ythan - the Ituna of the ancients - which bounds the district of Buchan on the south, takes its rise in the upper part of the parish of Forgue, from three springs called The Wells of Ythan, which, uniting their waters at about twenty or thirty yards below their source, form a very respectable rivulet. Half a mile below, the Ythan receives its first tributary, a clear bright stream from the glen of Aldovie, at the western base of the Kirkhill of Logie, near the summit of which there are the remains of three Druidical circles. From this point the stream flows in a northerly direction, till it reaches the Mill of Knockleith, at which place it becomes the boundary of the upper district of Buchan. It then runs in a more easterly line till it reaches Towie Barclay; after which it takes a south-easterly direction to the port of the Newburgh; and a little below this place it discharges its waters into the German Ocean, after a course of about thirty miles. "Crossing the brook near the south approach to Auchmacoy, we enter the parish of Ellon; and at about a mile further, we come opposite to the site of the Old Castle or House of Waterton, the ancient seat of the Forbeses, just below the granaries of Messrs Rae & Mitchell. There now remains nothing beyond the mere indications of this once proud mansion. It occupied a prominent situation on a rocky eminence immediately over the river. The building of the structure was begun, after the Reformation by the Bannermans of Elsick, and finished about the middle of the following century, by Forbes, a son of Tolquhon, the first of the name who possessed the estate. Soon afterwards, on obtaining the lands of Kenmuick, he became Constable of Aberdeen, an office heritably attached to those lands. The Castle and lands of Waterton continued in the possession of the Forbeses for upwards of a century, when they became, by purchase (1770), the property of the late Earl of Aberdeen. The estates of Waterton and Kenmuick now belong to Alexander Gordon, Esq. of Ellon, who succeeded to them on the death of the Hon. [Honourable] William Gordon". Extract from Pratts history of Buchan, page 234. Waterton Castle, in its palmy days, was a favourite resort of Jamie Fleeman, the Laird of Udny's Fool, from whence many of his singular sayings and doings emanated. - See Life and Death of Jamie Fleeman. 038 |
This name is applied to a small piece of land on which stands a portion of the New Inn, there is no hill visible now, but, it is evident that there was once a hill here, which probably was levelled before the houses were erected.-
Pratts history of Buchan, says, Here all inferior holders of land, who, in a certain sense, were his vassals, engaged by "ane band of manrent" that they "sall heill his consaill, and gif hime the best consaill" they "cane gif ony he askis" - assembled at his bidding, each attended by his own special retainers, all mounted, and armed to the teeth. Here all cases of importance throughout the Thanedom, were tried, and summarily decided. The place of assembly was the Moot Hill, called in later times the Earl's Hill of Ellon; a spot situated on the left bank of the Ythan, eighty or ninety yards below where the bridge now crosses the river. |

All that remains of the Old Church of Ellon is a portion of one of the walls, bearing the arms of two of the family's of this parish. viz. Cheynes of Essilmont (now extinct); and the Forbeses of Waterton, - "Ellon", we read in the View of the Dioces, "hath the blessed Virgin Mary for its tutelar. The patronage belongeth to the Earl of Aberdeen, who had it from Waterton, who had it from the Earl of Elgin; who got it with the other patronages belonging to Kinloss Abbay. It has a choir and two aisles; one for the Cheynes of Essilmont (now extinct); another for the Forbeses, but built by the Bannermans of Waterton. But both are now neglected and ruinous." This account refers, we may observe, to the Old Church, of which scarcely a vestige now remains. (Hepburn says that "the parish Kirk was then (1721) an old building in the form of a cross." "The Kirk and Kirk-lands of Ellon," continues the same authority, "belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Kinloss in Moray. It is probable they were conferred on this Abbey at its foundation, in the middle of the twelfth century. They certainly belonged to it in the thirteenth century, as we find that, at an early period of the century following, Robert I, confirmed to the Abbot of Kinloss the advocation and donation of the Kirk of Ellon. (See Robertson's Index to the roll of lost Charters by K. [King] Robert I.) The Kinloss monks probably acquired Ellon from one of the earliest Earls of Buchan. The Buchan family seem to have been partial to the Cistercian order." Extracts from Pratts history of Buchan. page 235-6 |

Ellon is a thriving and rapidly increasing village. Besides the parish Church, there are places of Worship belonging to the Free Church Presbyterian, the United Presbyterians, and the Independents. The Episcopal Church is on the opposite bank of the river. The Parish School is near the Parish Church; and a girls' school at the north-east corner of the area of the village. This is said to be the spot on which, in the latter part of the last century, stood the house of a Mr. Montgomery, the friend of whom Mr. Skinner of Linshart was on a visit when he wrote the famous song, Tullochgorum. There is a Free Church School also in the west end of the village, near the church. Ellon has three Inns. The New Inn, lately erected, containing excellent accommodations, and of imposing appearance - The Town Hall forming part of the design; the Buchan Hotel, at the northern extremity of the bridge, also a commodious and comfortable house of entertainment; and the Commercial Inn, on the west side of the square - an old and well-frequented house of resort. Along the bank of the river, westward of the bridge, there are some very neat, pretty cottages, fronted with flower-plots, and with vegetable gardens on the left of the intervening road, which stretch down to the very margin of the stream. There are three Banking Houses in Ellon, a Post-office, and many excellent shops. Markets are held here on the first and third Mondays of the month, besides others of older usage; the chief of these is Marymas Fair - being the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, the tutelar saint of the parish - held on the 8th of September. An extensive business is transacted in these markets, in cattle, grain, coals, lime, bone-dust &c. It is, in fact, the Exchange of Newburgh, being the nucleus of an extensive agricultural district. Ellon has many attractions, and therefore many visitors in the summer season. Some resort to it for mere change of scene; others, again, for its pleasing situation and comfort-affording accommodation, its salubrious air, and, though last not least, its admirable fishing. All that remains of the Old Castle of Ellon is a tower, and a portion of one of the walls. it is said to have been built about 1700. but it appears to be much older. it was added to in 1795, by the last proprietor. but the present proprietor Alexander Gordon Esq. has removed it all excepting the said tower and wall. -
"Ellon", writes Sir Samuel Forbes. "was formerly called Kermucks, and under that name was possessed by Forbes of Waterton, and before him by Kennedy of Kermucks. It has been built anew by the present possessor Gordon of Ellon (son to a farmer in Bourtie), a merchant in Edinburgh, and once a baillie there, and a rich man; and it is accounted here a very great house. The great hall having two rows of windows, and being twenty-eight foot high." The Office of heritable bailie of the Ythan, a river abounding in the royal fish, is said to be attached to the lands of Ellon; but whether or not any charter to this effect is in existence, does not seem to be clearly ascertained. The "very great house," with its "great hall, having two rows of windows," has, with the exception of a tower, left standing as a picturesque object in the grounds, now entirely disappeared, The other parts of the building have been pulled down, and an elegant and commodious mansion erected at a little distance from the site. |

This is an elegant building, situated on the north side of the Ythan and near the village, and commands an extensive view of the district in which it is situated; it is the residence of the proprietor Alexander Gordon Esq. and is of modern erection. The author of the History of Buchan, says, the present Castle of Ellon is a noble substitute for the dull, heavy, and uninteresting mass of masonry that preceded it; and, with its exquisite grounds and garden terraces - one of which, of ample breadth, beautifully laid out in parterres and flowerbeds, and said to be one of the finest in the Kingdom - forms one of the most delightful residences in Buchan. |

Tradition says there was once a castle here, and Mr. Mair the farmer at Mains of Kinmuck says that he has often heard the old people say that the stones belonging to this castle were used for building the Old Castle of Ellon; the track of a moat or ditch is quite distinct to the present day, and it is not long since it was filled in, and a new ditch cut through the centre. There is also a Tradition that the "Laird of Kinmuck" killed the "Laird of Waterton" at Ellon, and had to fly the country for it. - I can get no authentic information in connection with this castle, as all the records are either lost or destroyed. |

Revd. [Reverend] K.N. McLeod, Ellon
James Keith Chapelhall
George Keith Chapelton |
047 |
About three hundred yards to the north of the farm of Chapelhall there Stood a small chapel, or church, Surrounded by a Grave Yard.
The remains of the chapel were removed by the present tenant of the farm of Chapelhall and in the draining of of the grave yard Several Skeletons were dug up but afterwards reinterred at the same spots they were taken from. This occurred between forty and fifty years ago, and no traces whatever exist of either Chapel or burying ground the whole being at present under cultivation. The then laird of Eslemont was exceedingly angry at this act of desecration for he intended to have the grave yard enclosed and the remains Carefully preserved.
The Rev [Reverend] K.N. McLeod Says that there are no records of its being an Episcopal Chapel, as the Episcopal Chapel stood near the adjoining farm of Chapelton that there can Scarcely be any doubts of its being a Roman Catholic and further that it must have Stood before the Revolution for since then Episcopacy, rather than Roman Catholicism has held its sway in this district. |
