The parish of Drumblade is in the presbytery of Turriff and Synod of Aberdeen and in the Western Division of the County. It is bounded on the North & East by the parish of Forgue, on the south by the parish of Gartly in Banffshire (Detached), and the parish of Insch, and on the west by the parish of Huntly.
The parish contains about 9332 Statute acres. There are no detached portions of the parish of Drumblade nor are there any detached portions of any other parish situated within it.
"The surface is composed of small hills and valleys. The soil of the latter is deep loam; and that of the higher ground is thin and gravelly, but fertile. Some of the hills are covered with firs, but most are arable. -. There is abundance of a very fine yellow-brown clay, called clay-marl, and used as a manure; very little sand appears in the district. The district possesses large quantities of coarse limestone, freestone - here called paisy-whin - and moorstone, with some slate." Fullarton's Gazetteer.
There is no village in the parish. |

Statistical Account. |
026 |
A wooded eminence rising over the south east side of the town of Huntly. The origin of this name is supposed to have been from a skirmish which took place between the Gordons and Comyns (about the fourteenth Centuary) either on the hill or between it & Huntly Castle. There is no record of this battle in history and it is not unlikely that it may have had its origin from the Battle of Slioch which was fought within ½ a mile of it.
"There is another hill in the parish, and not far from Huntly, denominated the Battle Hill, that deserves notice as the scene of a conflict said to have taken place at a later period between the Cummins & Gordons. Hardly anything connected with it has been handed down beyond the name."

" A somewhat important engagement took place here between King Robert I and his rival the Cummings. The King came north to extend his authority beyond the Grampians when at Inverury he fell ill but according to Barbour was carried to Slioch which is described as a 'place of some strength'. While there the Royal Forces were assailed by the Commings assisted by Sir John Mobray & Sir David Buchin; the contest is said to have lasted three days ending to the advantage of the King. In this battle which was fought in 1307 Sir Adam de Gordon distinguished himself greatly, Sir Adam was the founder of the "Gordons in the north". The Battle is generally supposed to have been fought midway between Meet Hillock & Torra Duncan. |

The site of This Circle was pointed out to me by the tenant of The Leys of Drummuie who, about 30 years ago helped to remove the stones for building purposes -
It consisted of two distinct circles the inner one was about 8 feet in diameter and formed of roughly dressed stones the size of which were about 3 feet long 18 inches broad by 6 inches thick - Within this circle a quantity of burnt bones and black earth was found.
The outer circle was about 40 feet in diameter, and composed of a good number of rough stones averaging in size - from 3 to 5 feet long and of an oblong shape. |
