This parish is situated in the Eastern Division of the County in the district of Buchan on the sea coast between the towns of Peterhead and Fraserburgh. It is bounded on the North and West by the parish of Lonmay; on the South by the parish of St. Fergus; and on the east by the German Ocean. The ancient name of the parish was spelt Creichmont. It is perhaps derived from two Gaelic words signifying "Moor for Cattle".
There is no portion of this parish detached nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this parish. |

A Fresh Water Lake Covering about 700 acres, Situate partly in the parishes of Lonmay & Crimond. Up till the year 1700 it formed part of the Sea and was of much smaller extent than now, at that period vessels of small tonage entered it. About 20 Years later a furious gale blew from the East and scattered a hill of Sand forming a bar across the outlet, which completely severed it from the Sea. -
About the end of last Century a Mr. Sellar attempted to drain it, but after expending several thousand pounds the experiment proved a failure. It abounds in Trout & Perch, Wildfowl etc.
Property of Sir. A. Bannerman Bart. [Baronet] Crimonmogate & Mr. Gordon, Cairness. |

Rev. [Reverend] Alexander Irvine

Regarding this old church very little is Known, it is supposed to have been erected sometime in the beginning of the fifteenth Century; A stone built in the gateway bears the date of 1617. The Burial ground by which it is surrounded contains several grave stones evidently of great age, &. it is still used as the Parish Burial Ground.
"A part of the South wall of the Old Church, built in 1576 still remains in the Churchyard."
New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account].
"The old church stood a little to the north. Of this more ancient structure the statistical account informs us that, "the Church was built in 1576; at least this date is above one of the doors. It is probable, however, that it had only been repaired that year, as there is still a font stone in the east end." This "font stone" was probably the Piscina - a font in the east end of a church would have been an anomaly at anytime antecedent to this period." Pratt's Buchan |

A cultivated eminence somewhat oval in form, and evidently artificial. Situate a little north east of the above farmhouse. Mr. Henderson farmer, on making some improvements here removed a quantity of Stones regularly laid and supposed to have been the foundation of the old Castle which formerly stood here. Prior to this, and while trenching same place, Mr. Harvey a late proprietor of Rattray Estate, discovered several silver coins, (date unknown). Alexander Johnson Esqr. Hillhead, states that it was surrounded by a moat, - but, from the blowing of the sand from the adjoining hillocks it is now filled up. A well situate a little south is well known as the "Castle Hill Well",
"At the east end of the Loch of Strathbeg, and close by the present farmhouse stands a small hill of a circular form, called the Castle Hill. The famous Cummine, Earl of Buchan had a seat here, but, after his defeat at the battle of Inverury, by King Robert Bruce, this Castle fell into ruins. By the blowing of the light sand in the neighbourhood it is covered with a deep soil."

"There being a hot contention, under Queen Mary, between the Earl of Errol and Marischal, about the superiority of this little town of Rattray, the Queen, to prevent further dispute, erected it into a royal burgh; whence, at this day, there is no custom paid at its markets, nor do its inhabitants hold by the tenure of common tenants, but as fears; the town having lost its honours and magistracy, and yet none but the King being properly superior of it"

A large district forming the north-eastern division of Aberdeenshire; a Small portion consisting of the parish of Gamrie, is situated in Banffshire. It is bounded on the N [North] and E. [East] by the Sea. On the South by the River Ythan flowing through the Parishes of Auchterless, Fyvie, Methlick and Ellon, And on the West by the River Doveron [Deveron], from confluence of the Herne Burn in Auchterless parish. "In feudal times, what is now termed a district was commensurate with a Thanedom. Buchan was that portion of the Country over which the jurisdiction of the Thane of Buchan extended. Originally it reached from the Don to the Deveron. Subsequently the district of Formartine was taken out of this immense thanedom, and ever since, the Ythan has formed its southern limit"
