It is a barren and uncultivated parish, Consisting of a few farms and small Crofts. It is said to be the Coldest parish in the North of Scotland, owing to its mossie soil. This parish is like one entire Cluster of hills, the chief of which is the Buck, which is a fine Commanding hill Situated on the South East Side of the parish, it lies partly in Auchindoir, and partly in the Cabrach. According to Ainslie it is 2377 feet, and Crowned with a Cluster of Rocks. According to McFarlane's Geographical Collections, 1725. published in "Collections P. [Page] 615 The Water Royston (now called Ault Deveron) takes its rise about 6 miles West from the Church, near the hill Called Craigenscone, and after running 2 miles east, takes in the brook of Lerkindie, (now called the Kindy Burn) which rises from Mount Meddin, 2 miles South, and other two small brooks which spring out of the Buck, about a mile south, likewise. Then Continuing its Course by the Church, it runs straight North 2 miles, till it meets with the Black Water, another large river which takes its rise in a hill called the Klymach in Glenlivet, 6 miles West from the Church, where after mixing with Royston, they take together the common name of Doveran". The Church is a plain building rebuilt on the site of the former one; it affords the legal allowance of seating for 250. There is no record to shew when the church was first erected. - "In the description of the Diocese of Aberdeen, published in the Spalding Club's Collections, it is stated to have been dedicated to the Virgin Mary". There is a Parochial School, Supported by the Duke of

This is a detached piece of moss Bank, a short distance north of the Stapler Road, on the ridge of the hill. It is said that during the famine in the end of the 17th Century "the seven ill years," A woman was found dead there, who had perished of want, with a child alive sucking her breast, and that it had since retained this name. I understand it is called "Yard Hillock" on the Estate Plan.

The Ley Water is a stream which forms the boundary between the Parishes of Auchindoir and Rhynie, and afterwards passes into Rhynie, and takes the name of the "Kirkney." It is formed by the junction of two small streams; one on the North and the other on the South East side of Elrick, dividing Cabrach from Rhynie and Auchindoir respectively. The latter being the principal source of the Ley Water, may take that name to its top, and Mr Ronald believes such to be the case. |

A flat stone nearly sunk into the ground, with a small pile of stones Collected on it, forming a boundary mark between the Parishes of Cabrach, and Kildrummy, at the South West Corner of the Buck.
This Cairn was set up as a point on the Boundary between the lands of the Earl of Mar and the Duke of Gordon so far back as the beginning of the 16th Century, and the name "Quarry Stone" given to it, occurs in the deeds of the same date. It is evidently an antiquity.
["Duke of Gordon" above is corrected] - Must have been Earl of Huntly. Dukedom came into family 1684 - Marquis 1599. [Signed] EHC Capt. R.E. [Captain Royal Engineers] |
