"The parish of Alford forms the south-west part of the How and the boundary of the parish on the west is the crest of Callievar, the loftiest bounding mountain of the How. On the other sides the boundaries are nearly all water courses; that on the north being the River Don, the outline of whose course is nearly west and east. It has its source in the parish of Strathdon, about 30 miles westward. It is here 100 feet broad, and flows with a rapid shallow stream over a pebbly bottom; having dry grassy banks on the margin of the water. Next in order
is the Leochel, which falls into the Don after a winding course of about 12 miles from its source in the parish of Cushnie; it is rapid and shallow like the Don. The Burn of Bents, a small and more sluggish stream bounds the parish in the east, and the still smaller Burn of Buckie has its course wholly within its middle and eastern regions. The following gentlemen are the present landowners of the Parish; R. O. Farquharson Esqr of Haughton, Trustees of the late Mrs Farquharson of Breda & Charles Forbes Esqr of Asloon etc. etc." Extract from N. S. Acct [New Statistical Account]. |

"A small district nearly in the centre of Aberdeenshire, well defined by natural limits. The How, properly so called includes three other parishes and is in the form of a trapezium 10 miles long from east to west and 8 mile broad at the east end, and 6 at the west. It is bounded on the east by the mountains Benochie Cairnwilliam, and Minoway or Menoway; on the south by the Mountain Correny or Correnie and a series of low hills, which form the south part of the parish of Alford; on the west by the mountain Cuilleva or Callievar, and on the north by a ridge of mountains named Coreen. These mountains all rise above the limits of Cultivation and give a peculiarly sheltered aspect to the Vale. They are scarcely continuous at any part with other mountain ranges but spring up round the Vale from the tableland. Their tops are rounded with the exception of those of Benochie which are finely Serrated:" Extract from New Statistical Account of Aberdeenshire. |

This name applies to the site of a small circular camp or fort which is situated close to the parish church. The Authorities suppose it to have erected either by the Danes or Ancient Britons, but are inclined to attribute its erection to the latter from its outline of formations. No remains of it are now existing; the ground having been levelled and cultivated, but the outline of it can still be traced, as there is a small hollow where the ditch around it was before the present proprietor filled it up who when doing so, found a heap of ashes near the centre of the fort probably where a fire had been for cooking purposes. |

The village has rather a straggling appearance, and there is nothing particularly noticeable about the individual buildings, if we except the New Inn, built by the Laird of Haughton, and named the Station Hotel, expressly, we believe, to meet the demands of the Railway. *** We understand that the spirited proprietor of Haughton has made arrangements to have the whole of the thatched houses in the village covered with good Foundland slates, which will no doubt add much to the attraction and beauty of the place" It contains two general merchants shops, two banks and a money order office. A cattle fair is held monthly in it and two half yearly markets for feeing servants. |

The site of this battle-field is now mostly planted with fir. Its position on the tracings was taken from an old plan in the possession of Dr [Doctor] Garden, compiled in the eighteenth century. The contest took place in the year 1645, between the Covenanter generals Baillie and Turrey, and the Earl of Montrose. The following account of the battle is taken from a book entitled "A Description of Alford Valley Railway ", which, after describing a few minor sKirmishes, goes on to say: - " Both armies now came to close quarters, and fought face to face and man to man, with great obstinacy for some time, without either party receding from the ground they occupied. At length Sir Nathaniel Gordon, growing impatient at such a protracted resistance, resolved to cut his way thru' the enemy left wing, consisting of Lord Balcarras' regiment of horse; and calling to the eight musKeteers [? be] hind his horse, he ordered them to throw aside their musKets, which were now unnecessary, [and] to attack the enemy’s horse with their drawn swords. This order was immediately obeyed and in a short time they cut a passage through the ranKs of the enemy whom they hewed down with great slaughter. When the horse which composed Baillie’s right wing, and which had been Kept in checK by Lord Aboyne, perceived that their left had given away, they also retreated. An attempt was made by the covenanting general to rally his left wing by bringing up his right, after it had retired, to its support, but they were so alarmed at the spectacle or Meleé which they had just witnessed on the left where their comrades had been cut down by the broadswords of Montrose’s MusKeteers, that they could not be induced to taKe the place of their retiring friends. **** A hot pursuit tooK place, and so great was the slaughter that very few of them escaped. **** Thus ended one of the best contested battles which Montrose had yet fought; yet, strange as the fact may appear, his loss was, as usual, extremely trifling” |

All that remains of this castle are a round tower and part of a wall on one side of the tower. It is quite uninhabitable. All enquiries have been made about the origins of this castle, but all that can be gleaned respecting it is, that it was built by a family of the name Calder. The Earl of Montrose it is supposed, slept in this castle on the night previous to the Battle of Alford. The most competent authorities on such objects, at present residing in the locality, believe it to have been erected, either by the Danes, or Britons, (ancient), but, are in general, inclined to attribute the erection of it to the latter, on account of its circular formation, although the name "Damil" would appear to be a corruption of "Danehill". No remains of this camp are now visible, the ground on which it stood having been all cultivated many years ago. |

This name applies to an old fortalico situated a little South-east of the village of Alford, supposed to be upwards of 300 years of age, and at present, is but partially in ruins. Near it at one time there was another and similar fortalico, but all traces of it have gone and the the site cannot be identified or shown by any person now living in the locality. "Tradition says that anciently the castles belonged to two proprietors, and was in such close juxtaposition that the owners in fits of jealousy used to fire at each other from their high castle walls, the story adding that the one Killing the other, the survivor died miserable." The tenant of the dwelling house attached, uses the lower portions of the Castle for stores etc. Property of R.O. Farquharson Esq. of Haughton House. |

A river in Aberdeenshire. It forms a sort of twin-stream to the Dee, and is next to that river in Aberdeenshire as regards at once basin, note, and magnitude and resembles it also in possessing much volume, and much fine scenery, with very little commercial importance; yet differs essentially from it in some great characters, and even presents some striking contrasts. It rises on the sKirts of
Ben Avon, 6 miles west of Corgarff amongst the mountains which
bound Aberdeenshire on the south-west, at the head of Strath Don, and which divide it from the head of Strath Deveron in Banffshire. Its source is considerably lower than that of the Dee; the altitude 1640 feet above sea-level. A great part of its run, though somewhat parallel to the Dee, and at no great distance from it, is through districts much less mountainous, and abounding far more in plains and expanded meadows; so that, instead of the impetuosity and the fitfulness of the Dee, it displays a prevailing gentleness (current of) Calmness, and regularity. Running eastward on a very sinuous career, through the whole breadth of the Country , it flows into the German Ocean on the north side of Aberdeen. Its whole length of course is about 62 miles, though in a direct line from its source to its termination, the distance is only 41 miles. In its earliest stretches through the parish of Strathdon, which it divides into two nearly equal parts, it is joined on both sides by 7 or 8 burns, separated from each other by considerable hills and most of them running through deep hollows and glens. The principal are the Ernan and the Nochtil. All these burns abound with most excellent trout; and salmon is even here very frequently found in the Don, at least towards the lower end of this Parish. Turning northward, and dividing for a short distance the parish of GlenbucKet from part of Migvie, it receives from the latter, the DesKry, and from the former the BucKet. Then flowing eastward, it passes through the parish Towie; and winding northward, reinforced by other tributaries around Gorrieshill, it at once becomes remarKably enlarged near Westside, after which it resumes its eastern route, dividing various parishes, particularly Forbes and Alford, from the latter of which it, on the south, derives the waters of the Lochel, the most considerable tributary it has yet received. In passing hitherto through the high parts of the district of Alford, The Don flows through a narrow gullet amongst the western mountains, while its banKs are now partly wooded. Perpetually changing its course to the north and even the west, to the east and then through Moneymusk parish, to the south, the next considerably tributary, which there enlarges it is the Ton Burn from the south; when immediately it turns to the north again between Kemnay and part of the Chapel Garioch Parishes, and arrives at a point a little to the south of the royal burgh of Inverury, where in its northern bank stands the building formerly occupied as the Roman Catholic college of Aquhorties. This point is about [Continued p 64] |

about 16 miles from the source of the river and its vicinity constitutes, perhaps the most interesting as well as the most important part of its whole course. Here at the Bass, a conical mount of considerable elevation standing in the midst of the confluence, it is joined by the principal tributary, the River Urie, from the district of Strathbogie. The Don, here very much increased by the water from the Urie, notwithstanding the previous diversion of a large portion of its waters into the Inverury Canal, flows southward from the Bass, between the parish and low lands of Kintore on the south, and the mountainous part of Keithhall with Kintore on the north. It divides for a short distance, into two branches, which re-unite, enclosing a river-island to the north of the royal burgh of Kintore. Between Fintray and Dyce it is bounded by mountains on both sides, with valuable plantations on the northern or Fintray side. It then runs southwards, still dividing the parishes on its line, to Old Machar parish in the freedom of the City of Aberdeen, whence it turns to the east, by the City or old town, to its confluence with the Sea, little more than a mile to the northward of the Dee, where it forms a Kind of Harbour, into which small craft may enter in safety, but where no trade of any importance can be carried on. " Probably at some very remote period, Don had continued its former course still further southwards down the hollow of the links, till it united with the Dee in the harbour, and both together would form one stream into the ocean. Such conjecture is in some measure confirmed by the works of Ptolemny and Richard of Cirencester, there being no such river as Don delineated in their maps, or even mentioned in their tables, while Diva ( Dee ) and Ituna (Ythan) in the district of Taixalie, are particularly noticed. In the earlier record of the burgh, the river Don is distinguished solely by the name of Aqua Borealis." As this river runs with considerable rapidity during the last 8 miles of its course, and as the rocks at its mouth confine it to a narrow channel, and give it there a gloomy aspect, the idea of its flowing rapidly through a rugged & mountainous country where no space is left for forming even a commodious road along its bank , is at first induced; but after passing upwards for about a mile beyond the rocky chasm, where was built the spacious, stately and attractive Gothic arch, constituting the celebrated Brig o' Balgownie, and up to where locality above the Don is navigable even for small craft, the hills recede so far from the river as to form spacious haughs or level valleys on either side, through which it winds in a slow majestic course. Nor is the prospect here uniform, but agreeably diversified. The hills above Inverury approach close to the river, which seems to have forced its way with difficulty through them, but all at once it opens into another spacious plain, from which the hills recede on either hand to a great distance, and close again; and after another temporary confinement among rocks and hills and woods, the river once more waters another plain of great extent. Such is the general character of the Don, nowhere rapid, but in general flowing through level fields so little elevated above its usual surface, that when violent rain falls, it bursts its bounds at once, and covers a great extent of country, which then appears to take an immense body of water interspersed with islands, houses, trees, and other rural objects. Too often on these occasions it commits extensive and calamitous depredations; sweeping off whole fields of corn, and leaving nothing behind but want and desolation. A great part of the haug-land is now protected by embankments on the lands of Fintray and Western Fintray extending to upwards of 6000 ells in length, and protecting from 200 to 300 Scotch acres of very fine rich land, from the river floods. Similar embanKments have been made for the protection of the haugh-lands in most of the parts of the river's course."

New Statistical Account |
062 |
All that remains of this cairn are a few loose stones on its site; nearly the whole of it was taken away for the purposes of building fences etc. At the time of its removal there were found in it stone Coffins, an Urn, pieces of Charcoal and Ashes. In the Coffins and Urn were ashes and pieces of bones. The following is an extract from the New Statistical Account of the County:- "A cairn of stones, in the form of a truncated cone, 120 feet in diameter and about 25 feet high, having been partly levelled, there were discovered under it several chests formed of flat stones, in which were found ashes and pieces of charcoal, and in one a rude urn of baked earth in which also were found ashes and pieces of bones. The Cairn is on the Summit of a hill named Carnaveron, " the Cairn of Sorrow." The contents and the name of this monument thus both unite to show that it was erected to the memory of the dead, and from the former we may infer that it was the practice of the inhabitants at the time to burn their dead." |
