075 A splendid Stone Pier measuring about 2,000 feet long, situated at the mouth of the River Dee, on the North side; it was planned by the celebrated engineer Smeaton, and is founded on sand by immense blocks of granite, varying from five to forty tons each; it is amply supplied with mooring posts, capstans etc; at the landward extremity there is a small Observatory, and at the eastern point a small Iron Lighthouse with fixed light indicating the state of the tide to vessels waiting in the Bay for entry into the Harbor after sunset -
