075 St. Mary's of the Assumption, Huntly Street, Aberdeen, was erected for the increasing numbers of the Roman Catholic Congregation of St. Peter's Church, Justice Street. The building was commenced in May 1858 and the foundation stone was solemnly laid by the Right Rev. [Reverend] J. Kyle. D.D. [Doctor of Divinity] Bishop of the District, on the 16th March 1859, during the incumbency of the Rev. [Reverend] John Sutherland, and the Rev. [Reverend] William Stopani. It was opened for Divine Service on the 21st December 1860. It is built of granite; its Architecture is Gothic and it is composed of a nave and two aisles, giving seat accommodation to about 1200. The cost which amounted to about £10,000 was defrayed by donations and subscriptions of the faithful, and the clergymen are maintained by their voluntary contributions and seat rents. The steeple of which only the half is built, is designed to rise 170 feet.
