James Clark Esqr. Louisville P.O [Post Office] Directory 1860-1861 Annual Report for 1860 The Aberdeen Reformatory & Industrial Schools 1859 |
075 | The origin of this School was the result of a division in the management of the original Female School in 1846. when the feeling consequent on the Disruption was stronger than it is now, and its establishment was a well merited tribute to Sheriff Watson, for his labours in the organisation of Industrial Schools, by those members of the free Church, who were subscribers to the original School. and outvoted in its management. It is Consequently superintended by a Committee of Ladies belonging to the Free Church, who are most zealous in promoting the interests of the Children under their charge. The building is rather a superior one and is situated in an open airy locality Yet within a convenient distance of one of the poorest. and for a long time, most neglected districts. This school was opened in April 1847. with 53 children, and, in the course of the year, 112 had been admitted the average attendance at present is about 65. The children present a gratifying appearance for cleanliness, health, and cheerfulness, The Matron Knows the nature of her charge better than repress the spontaneous ebullition of young spirits, and by so doing, foster dissimulation and falsehood. The first lesson is candour and truth, in word and deed. Besides the usual course of education they are taught Sewing Knitting and household Work and trained to industry. Children may be admitted to the school and the other benefits without becoming inmates. The Institution is liberally supported by subscriptions, donations etc from the surrounding Nobility and gentry. The management is vested in a body of Directors, a Treasurer. Secretary, Surgeon. Matron and Assistant Teacher are appointed by the Directors |
