075 | This statue is of pure white marble is 8 feet 6 inches in height, and was unveiled by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales on the 20th September 1866, and witnessed by a large number of spectators, estimated at 30,000. Her Majesty is represented as a Scottish Queen. On Her head is a Royal diadem, in her right hand is the extended sceptre; and her left hand is disengaged, and so posed by her side as carelessly to control the folds of the plaid, which is fastened on the shoulder by a brooch in the form of a Scottish thistle. Around the border of the plaid, the rose, the thistle, and the shamrock are represented, the whole of the drapery being disposed very gracefully. The statue itself is instinct with life; the attitude is very striking; while the likeness is remarkably good. The pedestal is of red polished Peterhead granite - from the works of Messrs Macdonald Field & Co. [Company] On the front is an Imperial Crown, with the following inscription in gold letters underneath Victoria D.G. [Dei Gratia] Brittaniarum Regina 1866 The pedestal rest on a very considerable substructure brought up a distance of some twenty feet. The pedestal is 10 feet 6 inches high, and the statue 8 feet 6 inches, so that the total height is nineteen feet. |
