John Angus Esq Town Clerk Mr. Shaw Town House Gordon of Rothiemays Map of Aberdeen (1661) Kennedy's Annals |
075 | "This appears to have been an ancient Structure, and was situated in the West end of the Street, about sixty yards eastward of the present Tannery Street. Previous to the year 1585 a gallery had been erected over it having apartments which communicated with the adjoining house, on the north side. In that year, Patrick Davidson, the proprietor of the tenement, obtained permission from the Magistrates and Council to repair the gallery. In the Year 1793 it was purchased by the treasurer in consequence of an act of Council, at £140 sterling of price, and the whole structure was soon afterwards demolished. About the Year 1768 when the number of wheel carriages had considerably increased the gates were found to be extremely inconvenient and a great obstruction to loaded Carriages. An act of Council was, therefore, passed ordaining all the Ports to be taken down in consequence of which they were, in the course of a few years afterwards removed as being altogether unnecessary and indeed useless fabrics" --- Kennedys Annals. Note Tannery Street mentioned in the above description is now named George Street. |
