VITAL STATISTICS.

Tables III. and IV. give the deaths and death-rates of
each Registration District for the ten years 1880-89. Much
the highest rate (23·77) was in Larbert Parish, and much the
lowest (14·08) in Muiravonside. Next to Larbert come Slamannan
(18·86) and Falkirk (18·13). Of course, Larbert Parish contains
the largest single populous place (Stenhousemuir) within the
Eastern District, but the rate is much too high even in view of
that fact.
Death-rates in 1891. - Tables V. contains a statement of
the births and deaths for 1891, and Table VI. gives the
corresponding rates. In Larbert and Polmont the registrars
have declined to give the necessary returns, so that the table
is incomplete. The mean death-rate of the five Registration
Districts in the table was 17·923, the zymotic rate was 1·247,
and the phthisis rate 1·292. Curiously enough, the two districts
Muiravonside and Airth, which had the lowest rate in 1880-89,
had the highest in 1891, but probably they would be displaced by
Larbert if the rates were known. In any single year a very few
deaths more or less make a great difference in the rates of a
small population like Airth.
