TABLE I. - STATISTICS OF TOWN AND VILLAGES IN THE PARISH OF ST. NINIANS, 1881 AND 1891.

[Table Inserted]

[Page] 41

From these figures it will be seen that in the number of rooms
per house there has been an improvement in Bannockburn, East
Plean, and Whins of Milton, while in Cambusbarron the opposite
is the case; but in all the four places the rooms are less
crowded in 1891 than in 1881. The figures, of course, take no
note of empty houses.
In 1881 the most crowded village in the central District was
Longcroft, where there were 2·13 persons per room; and the least
crowded were Causewayhead and Kippen, with, respectively, 1·16
and 1·+09 persons per room.
Percentage of Houses of Certain Sizes. - The following
are the figures for 1881:-

(SEE TABLE II.)

It will be seen here that Kilsyth occupied by far the worst
position owing, of course, to the burgh being included in the
Registration District. Nearly 46 per cent. of the houses had
only one room, and the one-roomed and two-roomed houses made
up jointly fully 91 per cent. of the total dwellings within the
parish. At the other end of the list is Kippen, with only 8
per cent. of one-roomed and 32 per cent. of two-roomed houses.
In Dunipace and Haggs one and two-roomed houses constituted
between them 71 and 74 per cent. of the total house accom-
modation.
Character of House Accommodation. - As usual in
country districts, the worst defect in many of the houses
consists of dampness in walls and floors. At Upper Banton
the soil behind is earthed up against the back wall of some
of the houses. Fortunately, in this village the tenants keep
their houses remarkably clean, but they cannot, of course,
prevent access of moisture to the walls of the dwellings. At
Whins of Milton, also, there are some damp houses; but the
worst that I have seen are at Bore Row, in East Plean. About a
year ago Mr. McKerchar reported to the District Committee on the
insanitary condition of these houses. The owners were communi-
cated with, but, owing to difficulties as to water supply, delay was
granted. Recently I inspected the houses along with Mr.
McKerchar and reported as follows:- "This is a colliery
row situated on the roadside. The houses are numbered from
