COUNTY OF AYR.

KILMARNOCK DISTRICT REPORT.

The Kilmarnock District lies between the Northern and Ayr
Districts. It measures about 20 miles in length, from Troon to the
east of Galston, while its breadth from the extreme north point in
Fenwick to the south of Sorn parish is about 17 miles. Its area is
much the same as that of the Northern District - about 122,000
acres. It contains eleven parishes.
Population. - The landward population of this district is 27,504,
having increased about 1000 during the last intercensal period. The
parishes which show a notable increase are those of Dundonald and
Kilmaurs. The increase in the former is entirely due to the Troon
district, as the landward part of the parish slightly decreased. The
greater number of the remaining parishes in the district show more
or less of a falling off.

GENERAL SANITARY CONDITION OF DISTRICT AND
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ITS IMPROVEMENT

As I have not been able to make a systematic inspection of the
whole of the district yet, I can only state such conditions as came
under my observation. Judging from what I have been able to
learn of the district, and the inferences to be drawn from the
mortality returns during the year, I am forced to conclude that the
sanitary state of this district is less satisfactory than it should be.
But in forming an estimate of the sanitary status of a district, the
social condition and chief industries of the population must be taken
into account, and when an allowance is made for these it is likely
that the Kilmarnock District is not much worse than its neighbours.
Water Supply. - In common with the rest of the county, the
chief populous places in the district have a good supply of gravita-
tion water. In the greater number of the smaller villages, and in
miners' rows, and other workmen's dwellings, the water supply is
from shallow wells and other suspicious sources. Last summer the
water supply in many places in the district was defective both in
quality and quantity. This was especially the case in the neighbour-
[hood]
