E326/9/5/53 [Page] 53 ELGIN 20 Survey of the Carriage and Horse Tax arrisen in the Town of Elgin from the 5 Day of April 1786 to the 5 Day of April 1787 by Patrick McDonald Surveyor I Patrick McDonald Surveyor aforesaid Do hereby Certify that upon careful Examination of the foregoing several Rates and Duties I find the amount in whole to Twelve Pounds Stg [Sterling] and that I Delivered to James Duffus Collector of said Duties in the Town of Elgin upon the 28 Day of Decem. [December] 1786 an exact duplicate of the above account duly Examined and compared which contained my Oath that Notices were left with the whole Inhabitants or at their Dwelling Houses of the respective Dates foresaid In order that they might Report the greatest Number of Carriage or Saddle Horses retained or employed by them for the period therein mentioned which they Did in Substance as above. E326/9/5/55 [Page] 55 -- FORFAR 21 A Survey of the dutie on Carriage and Riding Horses arisen in the Burgh of Forfar [for] one year commencing the 5th April 1786 & ending the 5th April 1787 by William Greig Surveyor I William Greig Surveyor aforesaid do hereby Certify that upon carefull examination of the foregoing Duties I find they amount in whole to Seven pounds ten Shillings Sterling, and that upon the -- day of -- 1787 I delivered Archibald Thornton Collector of the Said duties for the Burgh aforesaid an exact duplicate of the above Account (as will appear from -- ) duly examined and Compared with the foregoing which contained my Oath that nottices were left with the Several persons before named or at their dwelling houses of the dates annexed to their respective names, requiring them within fourteen days to give in a list of their Horses retained or employed by them from the fifth day of April 1785 to the fifth day of April 1786, and that the the said Account or Survey is made out from the lists returned to me, and from the best information I could procure of the Horses of those who neglected or refused to give in a list thereof in terms of the Nottices left with them as aforesaid William Greig Surveyor
