Survey of the Carriage and Horse Tax arrisen in the Town of Elgin
from the 5 Day of April 1786 to the 5 Day of April 1787 by Patrick McDonald Surveyor
I Patrick McDonald Surveyor aforesaid Do hereby Certify that upon careful
Examination of the foregoing several Rates and Duties I find the amount
in whole to Twelve Pounds Stg [Sterling] and that I Delivered to James Duffus Collector
of said Duties in the Town of Elgin upon the 28 Day of Decem. [December] 1786 an exact
duplicate of the above account duly Examined and compared which
contained my Oath that Notices were left with the whole Inhabitants or at
their Dwelling Houses of the respective Dates foresaid In order that they
might Report the greatest Number of Carriage or Saddle Horses
retained or employed by them for the period therein mentioned
which they Did in Substance as above.
