A Survey of the Rates and Duties Arisen within the Burgh of Aberdeen from the 5th
April 1797 to 5th April 1798 on by Charles Farquharson Surveyor.
Aberdeen 21st Feby. [February] 1798 I Charles Farquharson Surveyor aforesaid do
hereby Certify that upon carefull examination of the foregoing Rates and
Duties, I find they amount to One Hundred and Forty three pounds
Ster. [Sterling] Likewise the additional duties thereon of ten per Cent Fourteen pounds
Six Shillings, also with another additional duties thereon of ten per cent
Fourteen pounds Six Shillings Ster. And that and that upon the Twenty first day of
Febry. [February] 1798 I delivered to Mr. William Copland Collector of the said
duties for the Burgh aforesaid, an exact duplicate of the above
Account as will appear from his receipt hereunto affixed
duty examined and compared with foregoing which contained
my Oath that requisitions were left with the Several
persons before Named or at their dwelling houses of the dates
annexed to their respective names, requiring them within fourteen
days to give in a list of their Wheel Carriages retained or employed
by them from the 5th April 1796 to the 5th April 1797 And that the
Said Account or Survey is made out from the lists returned to me
and from the best information I could procure of the Wheel Carriages
of those whose lists are deficient and others who neglected or
refused to give in a list there of in terms of the requisitions left
with them as aforesaid.

Careful Examination I find the forgoing Duties amount
to the Sum of One hundred and thirty three pounds four Shillings
Stg [Sterling] and that I delivered an Exact Duplicate hereof to the
Collector of said Duties which Contained an oath that the
persons before named were duly served with Requisitions [&]
are Charged agreeably to their Returns or according to my knowledge
[and] belief they were liable in said Duties

I John Menzies Surveyor do hereby Certify that upon carefull examination of
the foregoing Rates and Duties I find that they amount on the whole to the sum of
Fifty Pounds eight Shillings Sterling and that upon the ninteenth of
October I delivered to Mr Patrick Hallyburton Collector of these Duties
an exact duplicate of this Account duly examined and Compared which
Contained my oath that Requisitions were sent to the foregoing Inhabitants of the
preceeding date and that they were charged the sums annexed to each of their names
according to the answers they made [said] Requisitions or according to my knowledge
and belief that they were liable to these duties

I R Maughan Surveyor do hereby certify that upon careful examination
of the foregoing Rates & Duties I find they amount in whole to the sum
one thousand two hundred and thirty four pounds four shillings Sterling and
that upon the 21st day of February 1798 I delivered to Messrs Donald [ Smith]
and Daniel McQueen Collectors of said Duties for the City of Edinburgh an
exact duplicate of the foregoing Account duly examined and compared which
contained my certificate that requisitions were left with the several Inhabitants
or at their dwelling houses of the dates annexed to their respective names

of the above Rates and Duties I find they amount to Sixteen Pounds Sixteen Shillings
Sterling and that upon the -- day of December One Thousand Seven Hundred & Ninety Seven
I delivered to Mr Colin Campbell Depute Collector of said Duties an exact copy of the forego-
ing Account duly examined and compared which contained my Oath that Requisitions were
delivered to the several persons above named and that they were charged from their Answers or

examination, I find the foregoing duty amounts to the sum of Eight
pounds eight Shillings Sterling, and that I delivered to the Collector of
said duties an Exact Duplicate hereof, which contained an oath
that the person before named was duly served with a Requisition
and that he is charged agreeably to his return, or according to my
knowledge and belief that he was liable in said duty.

I William Brunton Surveyor aforesaid do Certify that upon Carefull examination of the
forgoing taxes I find they amount in whol to the Sum of Sixteen pounds Sixteen Shillings
and that upon the -- day of --- I delivered to Patrick Jack Colector of Said
dutys for Said Burgh aforsaid an exact duplicat of the above duly Compared
to which Contained my Oath that the proceeding habitant were duly served with
a requisition of the date aforsaid desiring him to make out within fourteen days and
deliver to me or cuse to be delivered to me upon Calling for that purpose an atested
list of all the Carriages used or employed by him from the 5 of April 1797 to the 5th of
April 1798 as much as one account of what Carriages he might employ anywhere els
and that the forgoing report was made up from the List or return to me from the
best Information I could procure or from my knowledge of his respective Establishment
