Mention is Made in Chambers Caledonia of a Fosse or Moat Surrounding the Castle There is a Small portion of an old Ditch about 2 Chains in Length which May be part of the above Fosse but it cannot be traced round the castle Nor are there any traces of a Drawbridge there is a neat Avenue leading to it, it could not be of much Strength in Modern Warfare as it is Completely overlooked by Craigcaffie Fell, Near which it Stands It was for Many Years the Seat of the Nelson,s family but is now occupied as cottages by Labouring Men it is Situate on Low flat ground is the Property of the Earl of Stair rented by J. Cochrane |
