046 This valey, extends South ward, from the South east base of Ben Griam Bheag, near the South extremity of Strath-Halladale, for Several miles along the Helmsdale river. There are very few houses in the upper or north end of this Strath; It is almost all under Sheep, consequently, there are Scarcely any houses except Shepherds' dwellings in the greater part of it. Some five years ago, Gold was discovered to be among the Sand and Stones of Several of the Streams in and near this Strath. Soon after this discovery was made, a number of people gathered from all parts of the country with golden hopes, but as they were confined to particular parts of the ground, altho; there was a good deal of dust and Some few, Small nuggets found overall, none of them had their hopes, of making a fortune, realized. The diggers were Soon Stoped, by His Grace the Duke of Sutherland, but it is thought he will, again, open the mines, after the Caithness and Sutherland Railway is finished. A few of the workmen, are said to have found, - Gold dust, and small nuggets, while making the Railway.
