John Morrison Ordce [Ordnance] Survey
003 The north end, and most prominent headland of Lewis. It is very much indentated by small Coves and fissures, and has a steep Rugged Coast line, which is in many parts perpendicular, and against which the sea beats with great force. It affords but one Safe landing place, or port, on the East Coast, And but one, an indifferent one, on the West, Whilst the northern Coast is almost always impracticable. Doctor McLeod states that the Whinstone dyke which is quite visible at Gress, can be seen here also, but after the most Careful search, I have been unable to find it. Many people, who are thoroughly acquainted with the Whinstone Dyke at Gress, have informed me that, there is no trace of it at the Butt of Lewis.
