Eaglesham continued | The salary of the Parish Schoolmaster is £30.0.0 with about £7.0.0 of other emoluments. The Parish school contains about 90 scholars besides which there are two others containing respectively about 40 and 30 scholars. 40 children of the mill attend in one [or] other of these schools. Eaglesham forms part of the ground made by David I [First] to Walter founder of the house of Stuart and was by him transferred to Philip of Montgomerie, about 1160 (see an old ballad - Memorables of the Montgomeries - 1600) or according to other authorities to Robert de Montgomerie (see Gazetteer) It remained in the family until the present Earl of Eglinton sold it to the Messrs. Gilmour in 1844. |
