[Situation] On the north bank of the Frith of Forth and is bounded on the East by the parish of Culross in the County of Perth and on the N. [North] & N.W [North West] by the Ph. [Parish] and County of Clackmannan.
The parish of Tulliallan is in the Presbytery of Dunblane, Synod of Perth and Stirling. It forms part of a detached portion of the County of Perth The parish is situated on a beautiful hill, gently declining to the south and west, and sloping to the north and North east; and this local peculiarity, in all probability gave to the parish the name Tulliallan, - the beautiful hill. It consisted originally of the barony of Tulliallan only; but in 1673, the barony of Kincardine, lands of Lurg, Sands, and Kellywood were disjoined from the parish of Culross at the instance of the Earl of Kincardine, "with concourse of the King's advocate and solicitor, and the recommendation of the Presbytery. The soil is various, consisting of course clay, loam, moor, peat, and rich alluvial soil recently reclaimed from the sea. The parish is noted for a mild and temperate climate, the healthiness of its inhabitants, and the absence of those diseases and fevers which prevail in many neighbouring parishes
The situation of Kincardine is one of the best on the Forth for trade and shipping. There is water on the roadstead to the depth of 21 feet, where 100 vessels may ride in safety. The ferry across the river here is decidedly

the best on the Forth. It is under excellent management. The Ferry is three quarters of a mile at high water, and only one quarter when the tide is out. Two Steamboats are attached to the ferry, which pass in about five minutes at all times of the Tide and in all states of the weather. The piers of the ferry were built in 1826 & 1827 by Lord Keith's Trustees, at the cost of 6468£ 5s. 9d. Trade and Commerce are decidedly on the decline in this parish. The extensive distilleries, collieries, and salt works which fomerly employed many workmen, are totally extinct. The shipping interest is also on the decline. The shipowners buy or build vessels of large tonnage elsewhere and these are seldom seen at this port, being chiefly employed in the East and West India trade, - the Brazils, Mediterranean, and New South Wales.
There are three places of worship in the parish, two connected with the Church of Scotland, and one belonging to the United Associate Synod. Lady Keith is the patronness of the parish. The present parish church is an elegant and substantial building, erected in 1833, at the cost of 3400£. The Stipend enjoyed by the parish minister is about 259£. The extent of the glebe is about 13 acres, and its annual value about 40£. The present manse was built in 1823. It is situated West of the town of Kincardine, and is a comfortable and commodious dwelling.
There is a parish school with a dwelling house and garden. The school is taught by a master, aided by an assistant, and is attended by 180 scholars. The salary is the maximum. There are three other schools in the town and parish, one of which is aided by the Government.
New Statistical Account.
The parish contains 4176 Statute acres by computation from the Ordnance plans. There are no detached portions of this parish, nor are there any detached portions of any other parish locally situated within it. |

During the latter portion of its course, it forms the boundary between the parishes of Clackmannan and Tulliallan. Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland |

"At Alloa, situated on its left bank, the Forth relinquishes both its sinuosity of movement and its fresh water character; and from this point, which is the extremity of its proper or productive navigation, whether vessels come up of 300 tons burden, it partakes the expansion and the other properties of a gradually widening and far-stretching estuary. On its northern shore it passes, 2½ miles below Alloa, the village of Kennetpans, and 1½ mile farther on, the small town of Kincardine; and on its southern shore, it receives, opposite Kincardine, a considerable tributary, and 2¾ miles farther down, at the village of Grangemouth, receives the important waters of the Carron, and sends off inland, away to the west of Scotland, the Forth and Clyde Canal, and again, at 2 miles distance, receives the tribute of the beautiful Avon. The frith of Forth is of vast importance to navigation and commerce. Above Queensferry, it is, in every part, one of the safest roadsteads in Britain. Inverkeithing bay, Burntisland roads, Leith roads, Elie roads, and various other localities, are places of safe anchorage. On the south side, the harbours are, Grangemouth, Granton, Leith, Fisherrow, and Dunbar, - Granton being the best on the frith, and Leith the most frequented, and the only one of much commercial importance. On the north side, at most of the multitudinous towns and villages which sit upon the coast, are harbours, superior, in general, to those on the south side, but less frequented; the one at Burntisland being the best on the frith except that at Granton.
In early times the frith was regarded as of dangerous navigation; but though shoally in various localities,

For other authorities for Frith see the numerous published works
quoted in the Name Sheet for Frith of Clyde.
[Note under Name as written, Frith of Forth crossed out, initialled R.C.:]
Frith of Forth has been written
on the Plans of Polmont Ph. [Parish] in the County of
Stirling in conformity with the Frith of Clyde
which was adopted in that estuary.
But the Plans are published
which contain the eastern part
of this estuary, and on them it is
written Firth of Forth. Therefore it is considered desirable to alter this name to agree
with the published plans. |

and heaved up by sandbanks, it is now - with the appliances of light-houses on Inch-Keith and May Island, and of accurately drawn and minute charts - so signally safe as to be hardly ever the scene of a shipwreck. The amount of trade on its waters was materially increased by the opening of the Forth and Clyde Canal, and had been not a little augmented by the introduction and progressively improving application of the propelling power of steam. On both shores from Borrowstonness downwards, are numerous salt-works; and along the coasts, as well as inland near the banks of the river, are vast repositories of coal, limestone, and ironstone; and these, along with the extensive and multitudinous fisheries, attract a very numerous resort of vessels. The frith abounds with white fish of all kinds, and is ploughed by fleets of fishing-boats from Newhaven, Fisherrow, and other fishing villages, procuring supplies for the daily markets of Edinburgh, and for the markets of other towns. At Stirling, Alloa, Kincardine, and numerous other places, are valuable fisheries of salmon. An annual shoal of herrings generally visits the frith, and, in some years, has yielded a prodigious produce; but its fish are esteemed decidedly inferior in quality to those of the western coasts of Scotland.
At Cramond and Inchmikery were formerly vast beds of oysters; but from over-fishing, the have been much exhausted; and they also yield a fish which, in quality and size, is generally not inferior to that obtained in many paces on the British coasts." The town of Kincardine is situated at the south base of a gentle eminence, on the north bank of the Forth. It is irregularly built, the houses chiefly one storey, and, except some few recently erected, all tiled. The only street of any importance is High Street, in which are the principal shops of the town. Formerly its shipping trade was considerable, but at present it is unimportant. Ship building and repairing on a small scale, a canvass factory wrought by hand-looms, and a pretty extensive rope work, are the only works of any note in the town. There are two good stone piers, one for the loading and unloading of vessels, the other for the ferry across the Forth to the pier at Higginsneuk. It has three places of worship, and four schools.
"The town of Kincardine is situated on the north bank of the Forth, about midway between Stirling and Edinburgh. It is a burgh of barony. The Trustees of Lord Keith are the superiors, and they appoint baron bailies as magistrates. The town has been very irregularly built. The houses are mostly one storey, and covered with tile, but those recently built contain two or three flats, and are covered with slate. The streets are in a bad state of repair, but there is a prospect of their being improved. There are two good inns in the town, and a post office; also a branch of the Glasgow Union and Commerical banks." Statistical Account.
The town is the property of the heirs of the late Lord Keith. It is not a market town, Alloa being the market for the district. The population is between 3 and 4 thousand. |
