The cross stands rather in the north west corner of the small enclosure with its top inclined a little to the south east. Its standing limb is about eight feet high & twenty by fourteen inches square. Its cross limbs are each about three feet long & about twelve by ten inches square, & the cross itself stands in a sunken stone about four feet by three. The cross is covered over with emblematic figures in various forms, such as boars, circles &c and many things not for me to divine. People as well as Antiquarian adept have various opinions as well as conjectures respecting them

OS1/25/30/24 | STONE CROSS (Sculptured) [Cross Park] (Continued) | [Continued from page 23] While some will not believe anything said of either the stone, its figures, or age or anything that people may pretend or presume to understand concerning it The Noble authority here given gives it as his opinion that in this case as well as many others, mens' opinions, conjectures & judgements are very often not invariably influenced by certain notices, conditions, physically, and mentally. Circumstances & the wholesale assertions excepting this object are conflicting enough to afford sufficient if not nourishing food for any incredulity of Knowledge respecting it. A visitor at Dupplin Castle some years ago, who had a fair Knowledge of Antiquarian objects, being a clergyman & an Amateur Antiquarian, stated or declared it belonged to ninth century . Others state it commemorates the Battle of Dupplin fought July 31st. 1332 While General Belshes, I believe, states it to have been a beacon for hunting appointments

Beedle Forteviot | 109 | [Situation] Adjoining the parish church This is the site of the old parish church which was disused previous to 1774 being the year in which the present church was built as appears by date cut in stone. The site has been pointed out by Mr. Rutherford and by Robert McGregor the latter is grave digger and in his progress of digging graves he has dug up part of the foundation several times. All the inhabitants speak of the church as being very ancient and a very small church but there appears to be no very definite tradition as to its age or history.

OS1/25/30/44 | [Page] 44 Sheet 109 No. 6 Trace 3 -- Parish of Forteviot The Halyhill, as it commonly called, a small eminence at the west end of Forteviot, was once the site of a royal residence, first it would appear of Pictish and afterwards of some of the Scottish Kings. Here Kenneth II, having reigned in peace sixteen years after revenging the death of his father Alpin whom the Picts beheaded, by exterminating that people and entirely subjugating their territory died of a fistula. This place seems to have been a favourite residence of King Malcolm Canmore and many charters are said to bear a date from it. Old Stat. Acct. Vol. 20 p [Old Statistical Account volume 20 page 124] There it is said was a residence of some of the Kings of the Picts in remote periods, and here King Kenneth after the Pictish Kingdom was annihilated , departed this life, as thus narrated in the MSS. [Manuscripts] of Melrose and Andreas Vintonius who wrote in the time of Robert Duke of Albany "Primus in Albania fertur regnasse Kinedhus "Filius Alpini praelid multa Gerens "Expulsi Pictis regnaverat octo bis annis "Atque Fortemet mortum ille fuit." See Sir James Dalrymple's Collect. p. [page] 90 Halyhill near the present church, but a great part of the Site of which is said to have been carried off by the waters of Mey was the summer residence of Malcolm Canmore and others of the Scottish Kings who granted many charters from this place. At certain distances from the palace were erected large stones by way of pillars, as the Standing Stone of Bankhead and Cross of Dronachy. ibid

[Statistical Account] | 109 | This name applies to a tract or district of country, through which the river Earn runs. Its length is nearly 40 miles extending almost due east and west from the head of Loch Earn to the mouth of the River Earn below Perth. Its mean breadth including its flanking heights is computed to be about between 6 and 8 miles, but the real breadth of the Strath or valley is not quite so much in some places not half the breadth. The parishes which are wholly or partly included in this valley or Strath are the following viz. Comrie, Monivaird &, Strowan, Crieff, Trinity Gask, Gask, Muthill, Blackford, Auchterader, Dunning, Forteviot, Aberdalgie, Forgandenny, Dunbarnie, Abernethy, and Rhynd
OS1/25/30/50 | [Page] 50 The name of this district or Strath has not been written on the plans of this parish nor on the adjoining ones as it was considered doubtful whether it ought to have been written on the plans of the 1/2500 scale, but as there can be no doubt it should appear on the one Inch map it is now inserted in Name Book. There are many similar Straths throughout Scotland of very undefined boundaries which if not written on the plans of the larger scale, ought at least be written on the one Inch maps. These districts together with the districts occupied by the different Highland Clans with the names of respective Clans with the names f the respective Clans and also the Roman Roads the latter of which cannot be traced with sufficient accuracy to admit of being inserted on the large scale could all be inserted on the one Inch maps with advantage to the public.
