042 | Several piles of loose stones, situated about ¾ of a mile East of the farmhouse of Kingseat, varying in size being from 10 to about 25 feet in diameter and 2 to 4 in height, no tradition in the locality as to their origin, further than being supposed to mark the graves of warriors. They are similar in appearance to those in the parishes of Lochlee and Menmuir in Forfarshire, near the same are the remains of several which are clearly traceable (& shewn on traces. they are generally supposed by the inhabitants to have been Pictish dwellings, Duncan McLachlan Upper Blackhall, an intelligent old inhabitant is of the opinion that they are anterior to the settlement of the Picts in Scotland or North Britain, having heard the term or names in the Gaelic of "Pecht" or "Pechtish" and "Cruinich", and from this supposing them to have been two distinct races, the latter deriving this name from their dwelling in circular abodes, the Gaelic Cruin signifying round. This would seem to apply more directly to the remains shown on Plans 42.10 trace 3 & 42.11 trace 1. To what particular sect or tribe the "Cruinich" belonged cannot be ascertained. |
